McDonald's has given up on its bid to sell meat-free beef burger in America.
US president Joe Erlinger has said the McPlant has been ditched because customers did not want fake meat.
The chain had been testing the McPlant at several hundred restaurants in California and Texas since trials began in late 2021.
Developed with Beyond Meat, it was made from pea and rice proteins.
While it has flopped in the US, it has been a hit in the UK, Germany, Holland and Portugal.
But there is little chance of a return to America.
McDonald's is now shifting its focus to chicken, which has become more popular among its customers than beef, partly due to its lower cost.
Salads, which were taken off US menus at the start of the pandemic, will also not return, Erlinger said.
Those that want salads are going to dedicated sala chains like Chopt, Sweetgreen and Cava.
'If people really want salads from McDonald's, we will gladly relaunch salads,' Erlinger said at the Global Food Forum, according to Bloomberg.
'But what our experience has proven is that's not what the consumer's looking for.'
It is the second bit of major menu news in a week - the other being about the return of an item with a cult following.
The McRib - seasoned boneless pork dipped in tangy BBQ sauce and topped with chopped onions and pickles - is returning to America later this year.

McFly is way off in the future......................
: ) good point
I liked the McDonald’s salad.
I work on Naval Station Norfolk. On base, we have a McDonald’s and a Wendy’s. I quit the McD’s due to the service.
They closed their drive thru and inside you wait up to 5 minutes to get your order.
At the Wendy’s, if inside you place your order and barely have time to get the ice in you drink cup before they have it ready. And the drive thru moves fast.
Content and Availability of Minerals in Plant-Based Burgers Compared with a Meat Burger
...In summary, except for soy and mycoprotein burgers, the total iron and zinc contents of the plant-based burgers were significantly lower than those from the beef. Likewise, zinc bioavailability was significantly lower from plant-based burgers, while iron bioavailability was comparable between the meat-containing and the meat-substituted burgers. Thus, individuals consuming plant-based diets need to be aware not only of the foods that are rich in iron and zinc, but also of the foods to eat in conjunction to maximise mineral bioavailability. Only the mycoprotein-based burger showed comparable zinc bioavailability to beef, and thus it could be suitable alternative to a traditional meat-containing burger. Future studies should now investigate the nutritional and health effects of meat substitutes.
What a misery. Just eat yer beef.
The current burgers are already meat free, but no one wants the McVomit.
I, for one, am a huge fan of the McMaggot. Juicy!
Hey Joe Erlinger, we don’t want cricket burgers either.
The new McRNA Burger. Mandatory, twice a year.
No doubt.
>> ...and those Europeans really think they can fight the Russians?
No, they’re confident that you and I can fight the Russians. And fund the war, as well.
>> As if any of their other ‘food’ is edible.
McRib!!! I don’t know what it is, or what animal it came from, or if it even came from an earth animal, but I like the flavor!
(I eat McDonald’s, I just don’t tell anyone, right?)
Yep. It’s coming. Or already here. As Gates has noted, introducing ‘vaccines’ into our food supply is a fine, fine way to “overcome vaccine hesitancy...”.
Interesting abstract. Burgers were sourced from a major supermarket in the UK.
Posts BUMP
McDonald’s has a place in the food landscape. There have been exactly two edible items from their menu, in my experience/opinion: first, their ‘Big Breakfast’, consisting of scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, hash browns, and an English muffin; secondly, their chicken sandwich (don’t know if still on the menu...), simple, on a whole-wheat roll. These items, back 20 years ago when I was on the road alot, were reliably tasty, CHEAP, and widely available. Many mornings waking up in unfamiliar towns in the lowest priced motel available, a good day started out with that breakfast, some coffee, some OJ. All before sunrise, and it’d keep me going for the entire day alot of the time. At today’s prices, I’d be packing my own food...
If you want a burger, order a burger. If you want grass clipping posing as a burger, order a plant sandwich.
“customers did not want fake meat”
Businesses stay in business by giving customers what they want. Customers can always go to a competitor.
Could catch on...the McCicada
