California has overprotected bears. They have an increasing bear population, increasing breakins by bears into homes, and now, the first documented fatality where a black bear killed a person and it was officially documented.

A BLACK bear did this?
Must have had a good reason. Release him on a no bail bond.

They said the request had to come from the house’s resident. "That's some catch, that Catch-22," he observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

We have the same problem in Florida. We protected black bears for so long they have become nuisance bears and are getting into towns garbage cans and peoples homes.........

Once Sheriff Fisher determined a bear had been feeding on a human body, he asked the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to issue a depredation permit so the bear could be legally trapped. CDFW refused to issue a permit. They said the request had to come from the house’s resident. Evil sand insanity rule the day in CA.
If killing and eating the owner doesn't qualify to have the bear trapped or killed, then nothing does.
Did it occur to them that the owner COULDN'T request the permit?????
Idiots.

I have to wonder if the lady had been feeding the bear? Did she have the back door open with the exception of the storm door?
There might be more to the story.

Bears are just a continuation of California habits on dangerous predators. They did the same with cougars decades ago in SoCal. Didn’t take long for stories surfacing of lone hikers and joggers getting killed. The cougars tended to eat a few major organs and leave the rest.

It is downright frightening. We have them roaming our city which is NOT RURAL....La Verne. Monrovia Calif my sister has them raiding her trash constantly.
We now give them the " right of way"....sad.
When we first moved here five years ago daughter thought she heard someone in our yard one night. We called the police. After checking around they concluded it was " Probably just a bear".......WHAT????

this is what happens when people are not educated to the fact that wild animals can be dangerous when you leave out food for them-like trash and your pets-or your yard is not securely fenced/or electrified, maybe bear boards on porches-bear spray and firearms in the house just in case. Doesn’t help that a lot of people who want to live “close to nature” don’t have the vaguest idea how to safely do that. there is a reason game wardens tell you NOT to feed the bears or other predators-or prey like deer inside your fence. This does seem to happen more in blue states, for some reason.
I live in a rural area, lots of woods, a river-and wild animals including coyotes, mountain lions. No bears yet, but there are bears just a couple of counties away-just a matter of time. The majority of folks here know not to tempt predators with trash, pets, etc-in other words, good sense...
