On November 8, 2023, the Sierra County Sheriff’s deputies performed a welfare check on 71-year-old Patrice Miller at her home in Downieville, California. At the house rented by Miller, they found a gruesome scene. The door had been broken in, and there was bear scat on the porch. What was left of Miller’s body was inside. The bear had been feeding on it for several days. California has a rapidly growing bear population and rapidly increasing numbers of bear-human conflicts.
Downieville is a small village at the confluence of the Yuba and North Downie rivers, 54 miles west of Reno, Nevada. It is home to about 325 people and was founded during the gold rush in the 1850s. At its peak, the population was over 5,000. It is wild country, and the town makes most of its income from tourism.
Downieville is the county seat for Sierra County. The Sierra County Sheriff is Mike Fisher. Patrice Miller’s home was a short walk from Sheriff Fisher’s office.

CDFW told Fisher that the depredation permit had to be requested by the house’s resident despite the fact that the resident was deceased and that the Sheriff’s Office could not make a request on its own. The homeowner eventually was able to issue a request, after which the permit was issued, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture trapper was called.

When we first moved here five years ago daughter thought she heard someone in our yard one night. We called the police. After checking around they concluded it was " Probably just a bear".......WHAT????
this is what happens when people are not educated to the fact that wild animals can be dangerous when you leave out food for them-like trash and your pets-or your yard is not securely fenced/or electrified, maybe bear boards on porches-bear spray and firearms in the house just in case. Doesn’t help that a lot of people who want to live “close to nature” don’t have the vaguest idea how to safely do that. there is a reason game wardens tell you NOT to feed the bears or other predators-or prey like deer inside your fence. This does seem to happen more in blue states, for some reason.
I live in a rural area, lots of woods, a river-and wild animals including coyotes, mountain lions. No bears yet, but there are bears just a couple of counties away-just a matter of time. The majority of folks here know not to tempt predators with trash, pets, etc-in other words, good sense...
Hopefully she didn’t take the ‘bear or man’ question seriously!

I suspect she did not have a gun.
California has made it much more difficult to obtain or own a gun in the last 30 years.
Meanwhile in reality, I will be enjoying hanging out this weekend in perfect weather at the ocean’s edge in Huntington Beach with blonde beach babes while you are in mom’s basement masturbating to your adolescent violent fantasies and crying in a corner immediately afterwards. Enjoy!
