The Libertarian Party’s peculiar invitation to Donald Trump
The Orange County Register ^ | 05/22/2024 | Editorial board

Posted on 05/23/2024 10:55:51 AM PDT by thegagline

Former President Donald Trump is set to speak at the Libertarian Party’s National Convention on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

It’s in some sense both a big win and loss for the party. For a former president to address the party is a symbolic victory. But, on the other hand, it is a bizarre thing for the party to do given that Trump is neither the Libertarian Party presidential candidate nor is he in any meaningful sense a libertarian. The only beneficiary of this, at the margins, is Trump, who has made clear he wants the vote of registered Libertarians.

“We all have to remember that our goal is to defeat the Worst President in the History of the United States, BY FAR, Crooked Joe Biden,” *** “If Libertarians join me and the Republican Party, where we have many Libertarian views, the election won’t even be close. ***

But, stepping back, it has to be said that very little of what Trump stood for as president was consistent with a libertarian approach to government.

It is true that, on the one hand, Trump backed tax cuts, modest criminal justice reforms and at least spoke critically of wars abroad. But on the other hand, Trump gladly signed off on massive budget deficits even before the pandemic.

He imposed tariffs, or taxes, on imported goods from all over the world.

He never actually ended any of the wars started or continued by his predecessors and actually escalated U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Yemen

For all of his complaining about federal surveillance, his administration actively opposed efforts to rein in the surveillance state.

*** President Joe Biden might be a crooked, awful president. But that doesn’t mean Libertarians should view Trump as a rightful alternative.

The OC register is concerned. No idea who they are, but they suck.

Perhaps we could join together to protect our Civil Liberties. Seems there are few real Civil libertarians left.

Libertarians invited both Biden and Trump. Biden turned them down. His loss.

OC Register used to be conservative, as was Orange County; but that’s been quite a while ago.

Orange County used to be a conservative Republican stronghold in California. That is no longer as it has become more and more Asian over time and Asians, like Jews, who should be solid Republicans have decided to join with the Democrat enemy for reasons.

The OC Register, like all newspapers, is declining because people get their "news" for free. So it was bought up by the Los Angeles Times which is a far left rag.

So now the OC Register is no better than the LA Times, and OC is Dem territory. About the only place in OC any more that is conservative is Huntington Beach.

“OC Register used to be conservative, as was Orange County; but that’s been quite a while ago.”

Today the Editorial page is Libertarian, but the rest of the paper is filled with leftist Democrats. That part of the paper gives the LA Times a run for their money.

No one is really truly a libertarian. People can’t trust a libertarian system at this point in our evolution. Libertarianism is an ideal, like perfection. We want it and work towards it. Trump is way more of a libertarian than most other politicians.

To me Libertarianism as an ideology is as unworkable as Communism in reality.

The principle of none initiation of force sounds great on paper. Except people who have greater force are always tempted to use that force to their advantage. So you have to have greater force ready to stop them. But that’s the rub, those that wield that force will also be tempted to use it against others.

IMHO, Donald Trump made a mistake in avoiding The Constitution Party Convention, where there are lots of additional conservative voters that he could have been speaking to.

Seriously, Trump is getting about as bad at pandering as the Democrats.

It got them much more attention than they would otherwise have gotten, and they got a couple of promises from Trump, so it was a smart move on their part.
