The California State Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would require new vehicles to come equipped with a function that warns motorists when they’re driving 10 mph over the speed limit.
If passed by the state Assembly and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, SB961 by San Francisco state Sen. Scott Wiener would make California the first state with such a requirement for new vehicles. The bill cleared a significant hurdle Tuesday, passing the state Senate on a 22-13 vote.
Specifically, SB961 would require new vehicles built or sold in California to include what’s known as “passive speed governors” that “warn drivers with audible and visual signals when they exceed the speed limit by greater than 10 miles per hour,” according to Wiener’s office.

Perhaps you didn't notice required seat belts and emission control equipment. Government has had their mitts on car design for a long time.
No. An app on your phone has GPS and mapping software care of Google maps. Not necessary to be part of the car. Your insurance carrier can offer a deal for lower premiums if you just agree to put the app on your phone to tattle on your driving behavior.
So, based on your example, you could be cited for not carrying your phone w HR enever you drive???
Oh, great. A tiny Newsom puppet on your dashboard, scolding you.
Japan used to have those warning bells that started ringing at 100kph (60mph).
Used to drive me nuts, and there was a black market where shops would disconnect them and then reconnect them before inspection, which was every year for older cars.
Every new car I’ve seen has a gps feature, even if you don’t see it as the driver. Just because you don’t pay OnStar or some similar program doesn’t mean the equipment isn’t in the car.
Perhaps you didn’t notice the rest of my comment.
“Now they’re in the refrigerator biz and everything else you can think of. Everything.”
Just because the government has had extreme overreach or control for an extended amount of time, does not make it any better.
IMO, We’d be better off with something that turns the cellphone screens off when the vehicle is running or in motion.
“That would have to require a gps with mapping software built into every car.”
It can be done with cameras.
The company I work for installed nanny cams in all the company vehicles. If you go more than 10mph over the speed limit, the stupid mother-in-law on the windshield starts bitching “Please slow down”. Someone cuts you off, and the stupid mother-in-law bitches “Maintain safe distance”. If you rub your nose, eye, ear, check your mirrors, etc, the stupid mother-in-law bitches “Distracted driving”.🙄
In my car it’s the stupid son-in-law .
“Isn’t GPS sometimes affected by sunspots, etc.?”
Also affected by “aluminium overcast”😁
I put foil over the GPS tracker in my work truck* and the next day someone from fleet management was looking at my truck trying to figure out why it wasn’t tracking.
*I removed the foil at the end of my shift BTW.
