In August 1982, Ronald Reagan’s father-in-law was dying. Nancy Reagan’s beloved dad, Loyal Davis, was an atheist — a troubling fact to the 40th president. So Reagan penned a private, handwritten note in which he recounted how the prayers of colleagues and friends had cured him of a painful stomach ulcer.
Giving hope for what lay beyond, Reagan entreated the older man, “We’ve been promised this is only a part of life and that a greater life, a greater glory awaits us … and all that is required is that you believe and tell God you put yourself in his hands.”
For decades, some of Reagan’s critics have questioned his religiosity, noting he rarely went to church. But the missive to his father-in-law reveals a deep and heartfelt faith. That faith also factored heavily into his political stands and policies, as I discuss in my book “Righting the American Dream: How the Media Mainstreamed Reagan’s Evangelical Vision.”

All the little minded media minions running with their DNC marching orders on the latest buzz words “Christian nationalism”
So let me understand this then, Trump want’s a Theocracy and the Democrats want total Secularism. That about it? But both want total devotion to the State?
I’m sure the Tribune was a staunch supported of Reagan when he was in office. /s for those in Rio Linda
The Sltrib has been a laughingstock for decades. Mormon haters love it though.
Christian nationalism is how this great country was born.....Which is how GOD intended it......it’s the turning away from HIM that has created the rot.
I always laugh when I hear that Trump - twice divorced, switched back and forth between Democrat and Republican, wasn’t pro-Life until recently, no regular church attendance, typical secular New Yorker - is somehow the standard-bearer for Christian Nationalism. All these labels are projection onto whoever the Republican nominee is. If DeSantis had won the primary, he’d be the “dark force” leading Christian Nationalism.
I wish we were getting Christian Nationalism but I’m pretty sure it’s something democrats cooked up to scare liberals into voting against their own economic self interest
The key villian is not nationalism.
“But Trump’s religious vision — one that hawks Bibles, disparages democracy and mocks governance — isn’t one that Reagan would recognize.”
This gal is pathetic. Trump wants to protect the democratic aspect of this republic, by making sure elections are not stolen. What this gal calls mocking “governance” is a pledge to get rid of a Deep State that violates both laws and the US Constitution. By trying to set the US free from that Deep State and give us back lawful, Constitutional governance, Trump is inspiring other countries to do the same.
It makes me really angry when people like this gal spew libel as though they were holding the high moral ground.
Well, the person can write words...what she knows about Christianity and a person’s beliefs are null and void.
Rosanne Barr just met with Trump again. praising him for being a gentleman, and being kind and helpful. If you take the time to look into who Trump is, you will find him a giving person who cares about others and shows it.
But I thought their line was that Trump is NOT a Christian, now he’s a Christian Nationalist? As usual, hypocrite lefty is redundant.
Anything like the 100 million murdered by communists in the last century?
BTW, the democrats are communists.
Adding the word “nationalism” doesn’t change anything which appears for example in the Bible. It doesn’t alter anything about Jesus’ teachings. There is no point to adding the word “nationalism” other than to slime Christians. “Liberal pedophilia” is more of a problem.
Exactly.
What she’s saying is more that Trump, by attacking the Deep State within the United States, is not trying to spread freedom and democracy to the rest of the world.
What this gal doesn’t seem to know is that the CIA is the leading exporter of crap all over the world, and it is seeking to destroy not only the US but also any country where freedom once existed.
The people of Europe, for instance, are resisting the “One World Government” that is sending their countries down the crapper, handing over their women and children to be raped by immigrants who have no concept of the sanctity of human life, and pound everybody into the ground economically so they cannot feed their own families. They want to get rid of farming, for heaven’s sake. What kind of “democracy” can you have when there’s no food for the “voters” to eat?
You can’t support freedom anywhere in the world without at least trying to get rid of the CIA’s lawless, murderous control of both the US and the levers of world power. Levers like the WEF, whose founder seeks to exterminate 90% of the world’s population.
I suppose this gal would say it is supportive of “democracy” if you whittle the voters down to the 10% who already rule the world.
Disgusting. This mindless blather is pathetic.
That is correct.
“Christian Nationalism” the latest Marxist pejorative designed to shut down any Christian from engaging in the public square. A clear effort to marginalize people. I. Will. Not. submit to your Satanic vomit.
A Christian nation is a dark vision? Begone, servant of Satan!
Hey Diane, are you aware that Trump served a term as president? And that it was recent enough that we can kinda remember it? And that he didn’t enact, or even attempt to enact, a dark vision of Christian nationalism upon the land?
I swear, the absurdity of these people. Remember when they were all bunched up over “Dominionists”? Whatever happened to that one? You never hear that word anymore because it was never a thing in the first place. Just their bogeyman du jour at the time.
If Rush were still around he’d have a montage of them using “dark” and “Christian nationalism”...
