The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), along with other members of the U.S. intelligence community, are pushing for Congress to expand Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 in order to fight the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
According to the Brennan Center of Justice, Section 702, “Authorizes the government to collect the communications of non-Americans located abroad without a warrant from a court. While this surveillance is supposed to target foreigners, it inevitably sweeps in Americans’ private phone calls, emails, and text messages too.”
(snip)
However, CIA officials believe in its current form, Section 702 limits the intelligence community from targeting everyone involved in the fentanyl trade overseas and are advocating lawmakers to expand Section 702 so U.S. spies will have more liberty when it comes to going after criminals engaged in the fentanyl trade.

This sentence without the fentanyl fig leaf is probably more accurate. The open border and non existent enforcement has exacerbated the crisis.
And true to form, the self induced crisis is now used to try and seize more power.
Hey, CIA, are you law enforcement?
No?
Request denied.
They could fight the fetanyl crisis by dropping some bunker busters on mexican druglord compounds.
For Sure!! Just shut down the f’n border!
it's a good time for those who aren't familiar with the Hegelian dialectic to take a crash course.
ROFLMAO
So, they REALLY want us to believe that they self-policed themselves and didn’t use 702 for anything on the southern border.
Additionally, they REALLY want us to believe that they now are subject to Congressional oversight.
C’mon, man.
The CIA needs to lose powers, not gain them. They have abused the Constitution and should be held accountable.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
We’ll have to restore our republic first.
Much like Lankford's monstrosity of a border bill, which sought to codify the Biden/Mayorkas invasion, I suspect the urging of an expansion is to make what they are already doing look 'legal'.
As far as "oversight", its becoming a sure bet to assume that the opposite of Congress conducting oversight of thr IC is actually in operation. Think Jeffery Epstein, P Diddy, or Tim Burchett's comments last December.
I suppose just closing the border is too damned simple and makes too much damned sense.
L
Fentanyl? OK, now you’re the Central Immigration Agency. Go to Texas and guard the border instead of poking through Americans’ communications.
the ____________ crisis, which they created [insert crisis du jur].
Central Invasion Agency
BS, the CIA is the biggest drug dealing and facilitation organization there ever was.
If they actually cared a rip about fentanyl the border would not be wide open.
For all we know they invented the stuff.
CIA may not operate within the borders.
Go to hell.
This has happened because American citizens have all become fat, dumb and lazy.
The citizenry assumes that Congress intuits its will and legislates accordingly.
Your legislators regard you as dumb beasts of the field to be patronized at best.
Freedom takes effort!
I find this hilarious, the CIA is the Drug Cartels, the only reason they want this info is so they can go after those that don’t fall in line and think they can start their own Drug Dealing business...They need to Eliminate the Competition is all.
