Study: Tires on Electric Cars Wear More Quickly, Have Less Durability
Breitbart ^ | 03/27/2024 | JOHN BINDER

Tires on electric vehicles (EVs) have less durability and wear more quickly than tires on traditional gas-powered cars, a 2024 study shows. The revelation poses another problem for President Joe Biden’s quest to force Americans into EVs.

The J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study found that EV owners reported more tire wear compared to gas-powered cars, Automotive News reports:

Findings from the study highlight EV owners having less satisfaction with the durability of their tires, expecting them to wear similar to gasoline-powered vehicle tires. However, EV tires naturally wear quicker because of greater vehicle weight and higher torque. [Emphasis added]

This gap in satisfaction creates an opportunity for tire manufacturers and automakers to ensure EV owners are properly educated, Ashley Edgar, senior director of benchmarking and alternative mobility at J.D. Power, said in a statement. [Emphasis added]

The study comes as a survey from Consumer Reports found that EVs have almost 80 percent more problems than gas-powered cars.

Wait! What? You mean that a Mercedes EQS class that weighs 6,779 pounds is going to wear out rubber tires faster than my Honda Accord at 3,000 pounds?

Who could have ever imagined such a thing.

Next, you'll be telling me EVs also stress our highways, bridges and parking garages more than ICE vehicles.

FWIW our EV crossover weighs about 10% more than the gas crossover it replaced, and about 5% less than our gas pickup. The tire wear seems to go along with that.

I can't speak about other people's EV's.

Just because batteries weigh ten times more than gasoline?

Who knew?

Near where I live you can see the rebar on bridges the potholes are so bad. Imagine what it will be like when the lightest vehicle weighs 3,500 pounds (Tesla 3).

Our roads and bridges weren’t designed for such weight.

Guess the “experts” in Washington didn’t think about this.

I bet its more to do with the instant torque the EV motors provide. The torque just snaps ON immediately, it feels great, but the tires will suffer. Perhaps they will need to reformulate the rubber used in EV’s and/or make a software adjustment to the torque delivery to the wheels.

Answer: Take about half the batteries out and convert all the EVs to hybrids, using a small hydrocarbon-fueled power unit driving an on-board generator, much like a miniature Diesel-electric locomotive.

Or, alternatively, develop a program of converting all these EVs to a hydrogen fuel-cell technology, and introduce a viable hydrogen economy, bypassing the batteries altogether.

6000 lbs and 0-60 in 3 seconds could definitely put extra wear and tear on tires.

It’s about $1,000 for a set of 4 basic tires at Coscto.

How many extra sets of tires will EV owner’s go through vs. ICE cars over the life of the vehicle?

Just another massive expense to “go green” with no, or even negative, overall effect.

It has to do with the regeneration. As you near a stop, you
let off the power pedal and the tires turn into generative
mode. This causes friction, and wears on the tire. My
regenerative tire wears out about twice as fast as the other
three.

EVs accelerate faster, so they are driven harder - which means more peeling.

During its lifetime, a car tire loses around 2-3 lbs of its weight through tear, and a truck tire around 20 lbs. Tire rubber, due to friction with the road, slowly disperses into the air, soil and ground water as micro-particles. Yes, it can be considered a kind of pollutant.

And how ironic (and predictable) that due to Neo-marxist fantasy, mandates, corruption and political group think, greens would mandate even MORE rubber particles being put into the environment due to heavy EV batteries

That only affects people who actually drive their EV’s. I bought mine to sit in my spotless, decked-out, garage and show off to people when I have ‘socials’.

So no problem for me.

(likely the response from most EV owners)
