Russia has made an explosive claim about NATO's involvement in the Ukraine war. Moscow claimed that NATO troops, disguised as mercenaries, are operating in Ukraine. The claim has been made by the chief of the main operational directorate of the Russian general staff, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy. He said that NATO troops control multiple launch rocket systems and air defences in Ukraine. The startling statement comes as the Ukrainian army is unable to defend its territory. Those were armed contractors helping in areas of support, “real mercenaries” have traditionally been the combat muscle like Russia uses mercenaries.
Wagner is an example of “real mercenaries” they brought firepower and leadership and combat muscle to lead the fight and win major victories, and losing 10’s of thousands of men doing it.
That is probably -exactly- the case.

When I was in the State Department I wanted to take a slot in the Saini Peace Keeping Force as an observer and I would be paid and lose all government retirement credit had I gone. I am aware the US does this for some other soldiers as well. Optics.

You are being overly dramatic, they work for a company as civilian employees and the company does a contract, the employees are hired and fired and can quit when they want just like any other civilian worker, they are not civilians in name only, it is a job, not a military enlistment.
If you want your “real mercenaries” look at the Wagner group as an example.
