Rental car companies at Oakland International Airport have an important message for anyone returning a car: If youโre going to gas up before dropping your car, watch your belongings when doing so. And, better yet, donโt stop at one of the stations near the airportโs entrance.

Thieves don’t need to break windows when the doors are unlocked.
$6/gallon are gas station prices already in many parts Commie-fornia.
Yes, seems odd that cops set up speed traps where they are most likely to catch speeders.
But, donโt seem interested in setting up traps in areas were violent criminals are most likely to be apprehended in action.
Unfortunately, the experience there justifies the warnings unless you want to prepay the gas or buy rental car insurance that covers the damage.
Smart criminals. Hit rental cars as tourists are leaving town, in a rush about to board a plane, little chance of an actual police report being taken.
Not that this could be foreseen by the local PD or anything, though.
It used to be at the Miami airport, police and rental car agencies were pleading with out-of-towners (especially foreign tourists) to get away from the airport as quickly as possible and not stop until they are well out of the area. The reason? Carjackings, murder, etc. Not just breaking into cars and stealing stuff.
Florida got rid of all identifying decals on rental cars many years ago. Today, a thief never knows who is carrying a weapon capable of inflicting lead poisoning upon a perp.
Good thing......
Been doing that for 10 years and no break ins.
Not as radical as below but, no one wants to dumpster dive
I emptied my car yesterday after going to Richmondย

That’s a great idea. My wife does it too. But we don’t live in a high car theft area.
Where is Paul Kersey when you need him?
A known problem area, and the turds won’t do anything to stop it. How disgusting.
Someone needs to set up a livestream. Like that RR bridge that is constantly peeling roofs off trucks.
Given the efficiency of cars now, gassing up near home is fine, and there sill be no visible gauge indication of use.
Several years ago - way preCOVID - a friend had his car trashed on Hegenberger near the airport. The PD on the phone call said leave your address and we’ll mail you a report form.
And that was before Defund.
Talk about impossible. In short, I think prosecutors in general are terrified of going into court.
As individual pros doing a tough job, I like cops. Departments? Forget it.
“Set up an ambush.”
if the cops gave a shite, they could simply set up stings using bait cars and unmarked cars to block absconders ...
I hear you. However, as a former road warrior, I recall some hardball rental companies insisting on seeing the gasoline receipt, which had to be within a short distance from the rental return lot.
They break the windows anyway, because it’s faster than opening the door.
