Given the efficiency of cars now, gassing up near home is fine, and there sill be no visible gauge indication of use.

I hear you. However, as a former road warrior, I recall some hardball rental companies insisting on seeing the gasoline receipt, which had to be within a short distance from the rental return lot.

Throw it away before returning. Don’t tell them where you filled up. Let them expose the gas tank if they like.

I don’t doubt you, but it’s never been my experience re the receipt.
