The Navy announced they ‘safely’ recovered the Military plane that overshot the runway and has been stuck in Kaneohe Bay for almost two weeks.

Kaneohe Bay (HawaiiNewsNow) -- The Navy announced they ‘safely’ recovered the Military plane that overshot the runway and has been stuck in Kaneohe Bay for almost two weeks. Navy officials say it took meticulous planning and assembling specialized equipment from off island, a multidisciplinary team of military and civilian experts to carefully raise the P-8A Poseidon from the bay.

Officials say the operation lasted 13 hours, beginning at 6:30 a.m., Dec. 2. The aircraft was floated adjacent to the runway by 10:18 a.m. And the last portion of the airframe, the nose wheel, lifted out of the water at 7 p.m., Dec. 2.

“Our team went through a detailed planning process to develop the best course of action to get the P-8 out of the bay as quickly and as safely as possible,” said Rear Adm. Kevin P. Lenox, the salvage operation’s on-scene commander.

“At times, it took us an hour to move the aircraft five feet.”

This comes after the Navy announced that this salvage operation will cost $1.5 million with about $200,000 spent in efforts to secure the aircraft and remove fuel.

Officials said the aircraft assigned to Whidbey Island, Washington-based Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 “Skinny Dragons,” was on a detachment in support of maritime homeland defense.

There were nine crewmembers on board — three pilots and six crewmembers. All crewmembers safely evacuated the aircraft and no injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation.

The article failed to mention that the aircraft had an all-female crew.

Here’s another article with pics.

1. 1 mile visibility. 21 knot gusts. No mention of.crosswind component.

2. Fuselage was not submerged.

3. Considered a hull loss at this point. First one in history of p-8 deployments.

4. No mention of gender of PIC yet.

The fact checkers say it wasn’t an all female crew, so that means it probably was.

Interesting sidelight...

I looked up the VP-4 squadron in question, and the CO is identified as Cdr. Matthew “Bromance” Fannin.

Makes you wonder.

So? Does the Navy train female pilots any differently than male pilots? It was also raining and very windy that day.

When you don’t use the best pilots to fly expensive aircraft, accidents happen...

Not sure about the environmental effect in the bay, but that pilot will have a highly radioactive personnel folder from now on.

Somebody posted a similar claim when the crash first occured but failed to provide proof. The articles at the time made no mention of the crew makeup. So, I’ll ask again, show some proof of this or clarify that you are making a poor joke. And even if it was a woman pilot or crew, how does this have bearing on the accident. You are criticizing Americam military service members for what is otherwise an apparent sexual bias against women in the service. What is your problem here?

USN Pilots are all trained to fly and land in adverse weather conditions.

1 mile visibility and gusts to 21 kts is not bad, well above minimums. *IF* it was a full 21 kt crosswind, that’s a bit dicey, but still doable.

Getthereitis may be the root cause.

The point is that runway is much longer than Chicago Midway and southwest lands that same plane there every 5 minutes so day long… in all kinds of weather. Navy pilots are supposed to be the pinnacle. Nobody crashes Navy patrol planes.
This crew was picked for PR reasons and likely passed into duty for three same reasons.

Runway there is 7721 feet long. PLENTY long to land a 737, which is what the P-8 is based on.

There’s a bunch to understand before blame is placed: pilot v mechanical v fuel state v weather. On and on.

Give it some time.

Yes. The Center for Military Readiness published just one of many such reports that highlight the double standard in Naval aviation where female pilots were passed in training programs where a man would have been washed out.

“Nobody crashes Navy patrol planes.”

This might be the first crash of the P-8A, but there have been numerous crashes of its predecessor, the P-3 series (A, B, and c).

Considered a hull loss at this point.

Is it too early to speculate where it will end up after the investigation?

-Leave it in a hangar for a decade or two before quietly sending it to the boneyard to be cannibalized for parts.

-Renumber it and send it to an outdoor museum, somewhere away from the media "thirty mile zone", such as Fallon Naval Air Station in Nevada.

-Lie through their teeth, cover up the costs, and pay a fortune to restore it and return it to service in order to pretend that it was a 'minor incident'.

Re: All female crew (Post 11)

The speculation that it was a female crew comes from the Navy celebrating P-8 flights by even all-female crews (not just the pilot and copilot) as well as a derivation of (Ann) Coulter’s Law, where the longer it takes for the news media to identify a mass shooter in the United States, the less likely it is to be a white male; the longer it takes for the military to identify individuals involve in a screwup or crime in the military, the less likely it is to be a white male.
