Biden invokes wartime powers to fund electric heaters as he cracks down on gas appliances

President Biden invoked a Cold War-era law in a surprising move Friday to pour taxpayer funds into domestic manufacturing of electric heat pumps, an alternative to gas-powered residential furnaces.

In a joint announcement with the White House, the Department of Energy (DOE) said the federal government would award a "historic" $169 million for nine projects across 15 sites nationwide in an effort to accelerate electric heat pump manufacturing. The significant level of funding was made possible after Biden utilized the 1950 Defense Production Act (DPA) to increase domestic production of green energy technologies.

Under the actions announced Friday, the DOE will send millions of dollars to companies like Copeland, Honeywell International, Mitsubishi Electric and York International Corporation, all of which are billion-dollar multinational corporations. The projects will advance manufacturing of industrial, commercial and residential heat pump technology.

How is our electric grid supposed to support all this nonsense.

Other countries have hardened their grids against an EMP attack and yet our fragile infrastructure degrades and is drained?

It is more like he is softening us up than anything else. If he were dumping that kind of money into the grid I might be OK ...but this push for all electric stuff is going to get people killed. One way or another...killed.

90% of Americans would survive a year after an EMP event.

“I can’t even imagine how it will work in the north, but the cost should go through the roof.”

Newer cold-climate units work down to -22 F.

Correct, they cannot transfer heat beyond the temperature range of the installed refrigerant.

Had one when I lived in Va...worked well...Here in Upstate NY...forget it. We have an abundance of gas...forever. My goodness,

Bottom line...they've been around for a long time...since when do they need subsidies?

Very true.

On a side, remember when Biden promised to not use executive orders then signed about twenty when he got sworn in?
Media never pounced on his for that!

“Heat pumps are ok in the southern latitudes.”

Newer cold-climate units work down to - 22 F. Fine for occasional dips. Extended ops at those Temps should have a geothermal exchange.

Omnibus spending authorizations allow the president to pick up the phone and take anything he wants from State, DOJ, Transportation, Coast Guard, or Border Patrol, and spend it on anything he wants to do! Legally!

That's why spending appropriations need to revert back to regular order bills.

The reason they can't do that is that they need to present a budget request, which they have not done in ten years or more. The agencies don't even know what they have spent and for what, and by who's request? !!!

The agencies won't even know where to start?

The grift is strong. Who is benefiting from this?

"Biden" has to keep those huge LNG tankers navigating over to Europe to fill their pipelines. They must be more important. No gas for us peons!

That’s right...I have the highest electric rates in Oregon. So, this is doing me no favor. Same deal with electric cars...will cost me much, much more.

I know, they DON’T CARE!!

The problem isn’t if the unit works, the problem is electric heat doesn’t stay warm. You have to experience it to understand. Gas heat just seems to stay warm longer.
