PORTLAND - The drive west was everything Adrian Hammerle and Eleora Gouine had hoped it would be.
The trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Portland, Oregon was a long one -- 2,300 miles -- but Adrian couldn't wait to introduce Eleora to Portland. After all, he'd lived here from 2017 to 2020.
They'd heard about Portland's crime issues but understood it's something all big cities are going through. The day after arriving at their downtown Portland hotel, though, their excitement turned upside down when they headed to their car to find some coffee.
“And when we got to the car, I looked down at the ground and I saw that there was a bunch of glass, and I was like, oh, weird. OK, and I went to go open the door and saw that the window was smashed to pieces.
Distressed by what had happened, they decided to park in a different garage -- on the top floor -- figuring that would be safer.
A few days later, they learned it wasn't.
Two break-ins in a matter of days. The city they had driven thousands of miles to see had turned scary.
And just like that, their Portland bubble was popped. Their safety became paramount.
“I can say that I was definitely a little more fearful and making sure that everything was good around us. Just because you know that, like, I don't know, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of scared.”
And what had happened to the city that Adrian remembered?
"I'm not really sure where it's gone. It's gotten so bad, but it's a lot different than what I'm used to, what I was used to,” he said.
And they still had the drive back to Michigan with plastic film covering their windows the whole way.

Leftists live in an echo chamber. A family member just posted on FB a picture of her & husband proudly getting their new COVID jab. They’re in their 40’s. The same couple that had a ‘jabbed only’ party after it came out.
You’d have thought everyone by now would be aware of the adverse effects, the lack of effectiveness, and that it doesn’t stop contraction or transmission.
Downtown Detroit is getting gentrified, it’s actually pretty cool there now. They’ve done a lot of stuff along the Detroit River.
As a ‘Michigander’ at heart, I’d really like to check it out for myself.

2,300 mile trip. True (not elite) lefties would have taken a smelly bus though two breakins in two days might make them feel more street cred (folks gotta eat, gotta smoke, toke)
Elites would do it in a Granholm approved EV taking as long as louis and clark if they ever got there.
I knew some folks in Eugene, decades ago. Eugene was starting to get bad. They had a solution fir not getting busted windows. They just left heir car unlocked, and nothing more than a little spare change in the ashtray. Today they might find that someone had moved in overnight.

But, another thing I have noticed is that Democrats, and leftists in general, just love to visit Cuba.
There has to be a screw less in the brains of leftists who like to visit hell-holes.
Over the summer a friend of mine drove from Texas to southern California to drive up the California coast to the Canadian border then back again to Texas. Big trip. People along the way were very interested in her trip but in northern California people started telling her to not go to Portland. Lots of people. She bypassed it based on their advice.

My brother worked his tail off, as a small business man, put two kids through college, and always drove a very used car. After the second one graduated, he treated himself to a nice BMW. Went to Portland this year, to visit the older son. When they recovered his stolen car a few weeks later, it had been stripped of anything of value, and converted into a rolling catalytic converter theft-mobile. Fortunately, it got wrecked beyond repair, so insurance covered most of the loss. Tow truck driver sent him a picture, including the trunk, filled with circular saws, jack stands, and a dozen catalytic converters.
