PORTLAND - The drive west was everything Adrian Hammerle and Eleora Gouine had hoped it would be.
The trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Portland, Oregon was a long one -- 2,300 miles -- but Adrian couldn't wait to introduce Eleora to Portland. After all, he'd lived here from 2017 to 2020.
They'd heard about Portland's crime issues but understood it's something all big cities are going through. The day after arriving at their downtown Portland hotel, though, their excitement turned upside down when they headed to their car to find some coffee.
“And when we got to the car, I looked down at the ground and I saw that there was a bunch of glass, and I was like, oh, weird. OK, and I went to go open the door and saw that the window was smashed to pieces.
Distressed by what had happened, they decided to park in a different garage -- on the top floor -- figuring that would be safer.
A few days later, they learned it wasn't.
Two break-ins in a matter of days. The city they had driven thousands of miles to see had turned scary.
And just like that, their Portland bubble was popped. Their safety became paramount.
“I can say that I was definitely a little more fearful and making sure that everything was good around us. Just because you know that, like, I don't know, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of scared.”
And what had happened to the city that Adrian remembered?
"I'm not really sure where it's gone. It's gotten so bad, but it's a lot different than what I'm used to, what I was used to,” he said.
And they still had the drive back to Michigan with plastic film covering their windows the whole way.

Dumbasses to go there in the first place. Maybe they were uninformed?
Moved after 25 years in Portland back to Montana in July 2022. Leftists completely destroyed that city which was 50/50 politically when I moved there.
Vote Democrat!
No glass store in Portlandia?................
Michigan. The husband must be a Polak.
CNN and MSNBC are designed to uninform dipshits like these two.
How could this happen in a city dominated by Democrats? Strange.
Everything Woke turns to Shit
Democrats are all-in to make Portland, Detroit, and SF the American way of life everywhere
I’ve only been to Portland once. A long time ago, and I doubt I’ll ever return.
I’d much rather go to Detroit than Portland.
“he’d lived here from 2017 to 2020”
Gee, I wonder what could have happened around 2020 to turn Portland into an open festering sore in less than 3 years?
What a mystery.
“Michigan couple visits Portland on vacation”
It’s easy to call these people dumb, but not everyone is addicted to FR, so given the near-blackout on urban violence and decay it’s no surprise that they’re shocked by what they see. They should be THANKFUL that they lived to talk about it, as many people don’t come out alive when they visit these areas (again because the media no longer reports on it, due to stigmatizing the Amish).
True. There are big sections of Detroit where you will be 100% safe now, because nobody lives there anymore.
Oh yes, and they can all get you in for an appointment in 2 weeks.
I wonder if the rental car companies are going to exit Portland? If this is a consistent problem in the city, the liability of leaving a car unattended overnight may be prohibitive?
Is everyone in Michigan that stupid?
For many years my wife and I used to drive to Portland frequently to visit the zoo, the malls, and other stores. And they also had some restaurants that we liked to go to.
Oregon had no sales tax while we were paying around 10% in Washington. This can come up to a lot when you are buying high dollar items.
Nearly ten years ago we visited Portland on an overnight trip we went to a military vehicle event that my wife had a display set up at. We met R. Lee Ermy there and he was incredibly nice to talk to.
We stayed in a pretty nice place for several days. I took along my kayak and our dog and I paddled around in the Columbia River.
But there were bums all over the place everywhere that we went to. I had never seen so many. And there was broken car glass in every parking lot we went to. I was nervous about leaving our van for very long when I was out in the Kayak because I could not find a place to park where there were not people hanging out and making a mess.
"Longer term, they’re working to restaff the Portland Police Bureau, deploying officers where they’ll have the most impact."
How's that defunding the police, replaced by woke social workers working out for you?
“No glass store in Portlandia?”
probably all out of stock ...
