Grocery price increases in the United States slowed down in August, up just 0.2% for the month. That’s an improvement from July, when grocery prices were up 0.3%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index, released Wednesday. For the year, grocery prices are up a modest 3%. This time last year, prices were up 13.5% compared to 2021.

Bacon prices jumped by 4% last month, the biggest monthly increase since June 2020. The increase comes as wholesale pork belly prices -— the cut of meat used to make bacon — hit a near-record high of $2.37 a pound last month, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture. Prices have since come down by about $1 a pound.
Overall pork prices also increased by 2% last month.
The August jump in prices likely has to do with an animal-welfare law in California. It requires that pigs have at least 24 square feet of space in their enclosures for their meat to be sold in the state, Bank of America analysts said in a recent report. That law went into effect at the beginning of July following a Supreme Court ruling.
But despite the August increase, consumers are still paying less for bacon than they did last year, with prices down 6.4% on an annual basis. What else got more expensive
Pork wasn’t the only food that got pricier last month. Shoppers paid 3.2% more for salad dressing, 2.8% more for shelf-stable fish and seafood and 2.4% for uncooked beef steaks.

Frozen juices and drinks are up 20.4% compared to a year ago. It’s the biggest annual price increase across all food sold in stores that the CPI tracks. Frozen vegetables are up 14.7% for the year, the second-biggest annual increase for that category.

Read a couple articles during the time of the avian flu that questioned Purina (i.e. Nestles, i.e. WEF) chicken feed because the amount of eggs chickens were laying went way down.

I think corporations also take advantage of situations that happen. They try to get as much money as possible while shouting the sky is falling.
No mystery to anyone who knows how long it takes to raise a laying hen.

When they say things are cheaper, they just mean they’ve backed off a little from their hyper-bidenflation highs. Everything, except Bud Light, is more expensive since Joe took office.

In my neck of the woods (mid-south USA) the only real relief we see recently is eggs and a slight drop in boneless chicken breasts. Leg quarters are higher, at least at Aldi & Wally World. Beef is so high, the only beef I buy is hamburger if on sale. Pork is running a bit higher than a few months ago, but occasionally is cheaper at a local market if one wants to buy in 10 lb. or 40 lb. lots on sale. Everything grain related seems as high or higher than a few months ago.

Re: Food Banks.
I have a friend in a small town in northern Illinois who manages a Food Pantry. They serve on Fridays. They are being wiped OUT every week and are serving up to 80 families each week.
She’s never seen it so busy, or so many people needing help. And these are not just homeless bums coming to the shelter, though they do have their share of that, too. :(
One of our local churches is in partnership with ‘Ruby’s Pantry.’ They give out huge amounts of food on a weekly basis too, for a $25 ‘donation’ and the pastor of that church will pray with you while you’re waiting in line, which was kind of cool. I told him I didn’t need to pray FOR anything, so we gave up a Prayer of Thanks. :) Anyhow, the cars start lining up at 4pm and are well around the block for hours on end. And these are everyday cars, trucks & SUVs - not a bunch of rusted out junkers. I went once to see if it was worth it - too much junk food - but I would eat it if desperate!

Re: Pork. We’ve got half a hog (butchered, packaged) coming from our neighbor in October. I think it will run us about $400 total, but well worth it.
Our beef steer - ‘Chuck’ - who is on pasture right now, can’t get into ‘the spa’ until March of 2024, they’re so backed up with people around here raising their own.
I’m glad to see people being more ‘food efficient’ and taking care of themselves, but it’s also another indicator of tough times. :(
Our chicken coop in the remodeled barn should be ready to receive laying hens this coming Spring. I’m excited to have hens again. :)

That’s due to fuel prices and the price of fertilizers thanks to Russia and Ukraine. Seed is still relatively cheap. ;)
I was surprised to see some deals on flour in this week’s grocery ad. Gold Medal brand, no less.
