A couple of years ago, an "80 percent" receiver I purchased refused to accept parts, let alone chamber and fire cartridges, until my son and I drilled and milled it to completion; that's because unfinished firearms are not firearms. For a long time, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agreed. But, pressured by the Biden administration, the ATF tried to extend firearms regulations to a lot of things that aren't guns but could, with work, become one. Now a federal judge is injecting some sense, ruling in a lawsuit that bureaucrats can't just decide that inert objects are guns.

Except he will just ignore it like he does everything else that was ruled against him.
Maybe SCOTUS needs their own Ruling Compliance Division with the authority to arrest anyone who violates their rulings.
Even the President.
Several years ago, I decided I would build an A-10 rifle, until I talked to my local gunsmith. He convinced me that I would have trouble making all of the components match well, unless they were all from the same company. (he was right) AR-15’s are almost all very close copies of the original M-16, which I shot in the service. It makes mix and match very practical on the AR-15.
I looked at the 80% lower receivers and they had some variance in brand and big variances in the alloy they were cast from. Most are forged and machined from 6061 or 7075 aluminum alloy. Some are not. The weight of the rifle is somewhat affected by choice of alloy, but also the strength. 7075 is much stronger, but less acid resistant. 6061 is easier to cast or forge than 7075, and it is less expensive.
I opted out of that and bought a bolt action in it’s place. Fine shooting rifle.
Few months back I ordered a serialized lower for an AR-15 rifle build. Had it shipped to a local FFL, then I ordered the parts from several places. I was surprised how easy it went together. And the finish was amazing. Am at the stock phase now, it won’t be made of plastic. Have it roughed out but not finished yet.
How does that connect to this article? When I ordered the lower, it was required it be recorded as a rifle sale. Now, unless something reverses it, looks like the ATF no longer has the courts approval on the whole administrative process they have compiled for years. And home built rifles are still legal.
I really prefer the old school, steel frame rifles. They are heavy but they are strong enough for heavy calibers. (My father during WWII was an armorer, serviced Quad 50’s and Bofors.)

Yes. Agree. And thanks for heads up. Most of my parts are from Anderson. Including 18” 1:8 barrel.
I am impressed with the precision of their forged or die cast components, but chose not to use some components.
Have good friend that is a gunsmith. He will be inspecting final stage. I don’t have go/no go gauge, he does. I have tools for rest of assembly. He has built several hundred of them.
When I have the stock and fore grip installed I will go visit him again. Have know him from childhood. It is a small town.

I completely agree. SCOTUS sets the “Law of the land”, why should government be immune to these same laws?
They won’t though... They sold their souls to the same demons government did.
It was completely machined, and serialized. Those were and are still required to be transferred through an FFL. At the time of transfer, I believe you can designate it a pistol, and build either a pistol or rifle with it. If transferred as a rifle, it must be made into a rifle.
I never put any thought to designating pistol or rifle.
Point I was trying to make is, the recent courts have done a start over on ATF “rules”. One that they apparently never expected.
BATF is total FUBAR. So is DOJ.
I absolutely hate bureaucraps and idiots running things by mindless heartless brainless computers.
We are absolutely dying from complexity and the only solutions offered is more complexity.
Complexity will kill the nation and any freedom for mankind.
