Bud Light is no longer America's best-selling beer {Mexican beer Modelo Especial now rules}

Bud Light sales plunged in May, toppling the beer brand from its longtime perch as the nation's best-selling brew.

Parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) sold $297 million worth of Bud Light for the four weeks ending May 28 — a 23% drop from the same time period the year before, according to consumer behavior data analytics firm Circana. Modelo Especial ranked No.1 in May, with $333 million in sales — a 15% increase from 2022.

Modelo Especial is a pilsner-style lager that began nearly 100 years ago in Mexico. Constellation Brands bought Modelo from ABI in 2013. Since then, Constellation has prioritized sales of Modelo, specifically by making sure stores never run out of stock, Williams said.

Constellation also plans to increase the brand's sales by introducing "Modelo to new consumers through increased distribution and presence at retail," spokesperson Stephanie McGuane told CBS MoneyWatch on Thursday.

I would like to know which Americans bought $297 million worth of Bud Light during the month of May?

That number may not be just US sales. I think Modelo is an IMBEV holding like AB too. Personally I drink neither.

InBev (the same owner as Bud-light/Budweiser) owns Modelo Mexico

As part of InBev’s purchase of Modelo in 2013, they had to sell the US business of Modelo - to Constellation Brands

If people want to avoid all InBev products, they should inspect carefully the origin of their Modelo

I don’t always drink beer. But when I do, it isn’t Modelo either.

As Equine1952 noted, that may be a global sales figure. I can't tell one way or another.

That said, remember that there's enough Leftist idiots out there to make a contest of any election, and a good chunk of them are probably buying Bud Light, be it still buying it, or buying it to support the delusional trans cause.

Then factor in apathy- people who just don't care, or maybe those who are uncomfortable buying Bud Light but still do so because it's their favorite.

There'll definitely be some that take advantage of the massive price cuts and/or rebates we've seen on Bud Light, especially younger people (think college age and/or broke).

All the above said, it'll be interesting to see what sales numbers are once we're in July- I imagine a good chunk of beer distribution/sales contracts are done on a quarterly basis, and this thing started in Q2. There may well be a significant stepwise drop off in sales as Q3 starts on July first and distributors say "hell no!" to renewing quarterly contracts with transweiser...

** Just wanted to comment on my own post: yeah, I work for a company whose fiscal quarters are aligned with the regular calendar, and so I used those out of habit. I’m well aware that many (most, actually, I suspect) would use different Q1/Q2/Q3 etc dates than I did in my post.

Olympia was my favorite in the late 70s. 2nd choice was Miller High Life. Both different from other "hoppier, bitter" offerings. Guinness is fine with a good steak. Oktoberfest from Sam Adams is a favorite in late Summer.

Yes, I also noticed that Olympia seemed to taste better than its direct competitors in the manner that you describe. I also enjoy Guiness (plus others such as Boddingtons and Wexford). I have not tried Sam Adams Oktoberfest, but I am partial to Spaten (although I have not kept up to date with recent Oktoberfest style offerings; I just looked briefly, and there seem to be many more now).

Never liked it.

Just remember, Mexican beer is made with Mexican water.

AB owns Modelo outside the US. Modelo inside the US is Constellation Brands under permanent license - AB had to sell off the US operations of Modelo for anti-trust reasons when they bought the parent company.

As part of the sale, Constellation got one of the Mexican breweries to make Modelo in. All US distribution of Modelo is Constellation, not AB, so if it was made in USA or Mexico, it’s Constellation and AB doesn’t have anything to do with it.

“I would like to know which Americans bought $297 million worth of Bud Light during the month of May”

Stores are selling out of all the other brands, and the addicted drinkers want a beer! Yhey can’t find one except for Bud Lite that has not been sold, so.... a percentage of sales are going to the people who NEED a freaking beer, no matter what... probably female (sorry ladies).

Wiki InBev, expand the section on brands, and they’re all there... well maybe not all but a number of them and it was quite surprising when I read it.

I don’t drink beer per se, but I like an occasional glass of Red table wine (blended). If it’s a beer it’s dark like elephant malt liquor, however I do like San Miguel (Sam Magoo) and Singha when I can get it.
