ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is banning natural gas stoves and heating systems in most new buildings, a policy that’s part of a national movement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The law negotiated by Gov. Kathy Hochul and her fellow Democrats in the Legislature is part of the state budget and puts New York in the forefront of states targeting emissions from buildings. When the phase-in starts in 2026, newly constructed buildings will have to forego fossil fuel equipment in favor of devices like induction ranges and heat pumps that run on electricity.
The state mandate applies only to new construction and does not affect existing buildings.
Government efforts to wean society off of fossil fuel-burning equipment — especially gas stoves — have been slammed by Republican officials and other opponents as heavy-handed infringements on consumer choice. But environmentalists say climate goals can’t be reached without addressing homes and businesses.
The new construction mandate avoids — at least for now — the more politically fraught issue of replacing existing fossil fuel equipment. But critics say it will add costs to new construction and put more strain on the electrical grid, while still limiting options for buyers of newly constructed homes.
“Why shouldn’t people have a choice on how to heat their home?” asked Republican Assemblyman Phil Palmesano.
The measure will prohibit the installation of fossil-fuel equipment in new buildings, starting in 2026 for structures of seven stories or less. The ban for larger buildings starts in 2029.
There are number of exemptions, such as for emergency backup power and for commercial food establishments, laboratories and car washes.

There appears to be no limit to what the state can mandate.
Right, and how is the power grid supposed to handle all those new electric appliances?
CA will beat all states to the bottom with with a ban on diesel trucks and trains by 2037.
This war against natural gas is ridiculous.

But if you think it’s a problem, according to MSDNC you are addicted to bad bathtub meth. I guess there are different qualities of meth, MSDNC seems to know the difference between good meth and bad meth, because they are very smart . And the ban isn’t just gas stoves, it’s heat as well so they can laugh when you freeze to death and call you a meth addict . And if you use electric heat the electricity becomes from a power plant burning…….
GAS
A national movement my ass.
It’s a Fascist government movement.
Congress squashed Biden’s attempt.
“Critics say it will add costs to new construction and put more strain on the electrical grid, while still limiting options for buyers of newly constructed homes.”
What do those silly “critics” know? If we just ban every fossil fuel, we’ll protect the climate. Those critics are just a bunch of Chicken Littles. Those criticisms listed above are just nuts. None of those things are true!
It is basically a war against sanity. And the crazies might be winning.
Then when additional high voltage transmission lines are required to service what would have been nat-gas consumers, they’ll try to stop those.
NB: Nat-gas pipelines can be buried, 220kv electric lines can’t be.
You did the legwork. I was just going to say remember how the media kept telling us we were out of our minds and right wing fanatics for bringing up the fact that they said they were going to eliminate all gas stoves.
What about boilers for hospitals and the like?
“But environmentalists say climate goals can’t be reached without addressing homes and businesses.”
By stripping people of their freedom, you mean. And you still won’t reach your goal since this climate change garbage is a scam of yours.
Excluding state, federal, and city buildings of course.
I wonder if ‘commercial food establishments’ includes restaurants. The fancy New Yorkers aren’t going to like giving up their fancy restaurant food. (Most competent chefs greatly appreciate their gas stoves...)
When is NY going to ban the large office buildings who burn waste paper by the ton at 4am to 5am every morning? In Manhattan they all burn their paper waste when no one can see the smoke.
Eliminate gas and you solve many infrastructure problems.
Natural gas is the cleanest “fossil” fuel there is.
Only Hydrogen would be “cleaner”
The only byproduct of a hydrogen-based “fuel” system will be dihydrogen monoxide, which is the most abundant and plentiful greenhouse gas in the atmosphere by several orders of magnitude.
“ There are number of exemptions, such as for emergency backup power and for commercial food establishments, laboratories and car washes.”
And there it is.
