A man from California learned a hard lesson about electric vehicles (EVs) after his Rivian truck ran out of battery charge had to be towed out of the Wyoming mountains.
“Towed my first EV Today… a brand new $90,000 electric pickup from the rest area on South Pass to Rocksprings…” Jake Yeaman, tow truck operator with Specialty Towing, wrote in a Facebook post.
“He had charged in Riverton enough to go 120 miles, but ran out of kilovolts halfway over the mountain (about 60 miles) so you might want to make sure your tank is full of electrons before tackling any mountain passes,” the tow truck operator added.
Yeaman told Cowboy State Daily that the man who was driving the new $90,000 electric truck spoke with a heavy Chinese accent, so much of what he learned about the situation came from others who spoke to the stranded driver.

“ran out of kilovolts?”
We're told over and over that Asians are smarter than the rest of us. LOL

Note the rescue would not be able to happen without an ICE vehicle.
If they are all banmed/gone, no more driver rescue or assistance like this.
That’s Wyoming speak for SoL.
Cold, hills, towing and heating the cabin drastically reduce battery efficiency.
I caught that too, like it's poor script writing of a low budget sci-fi show. But then I read it again and it came from the tow truck driver, who might not have much experience with EV's.
Lol. Those range estimates are for level ground under perfect conditions. Plus they add on a few shyts and giggles. Those roads through the Wyoming Rockies can be steep. Long and steep. Good luck with EVs there.
South pass is a straight line over the mountains.
It’s not really in the mountains.
I’ve been over South pass a hundred times.
It’s not a road you want to take in a blizzard
“Towed my first EV Today...”
It won’t be your last!😎
Seems to me these vehicles need more than just a simple charge capacity = estimated miles gauge.
Perhaps you need to use a navigation system that has accurate topography and meteorological data so a more accurate representation of available mileage can be calculated.
Or you could just drive a gas or diesel vehicle where 100+ years of production and infrastructure have worked out all those silly bugs that make a simple 120 mile trip so challenging.
“We’re told over and over that Asians are smarter than the rest of us...”
He was from California..that’s the modifier.
Can’t wait till Matt’s Off Road Rescue youtube channel adds a whole separate division for idiots who go off-roading in their EV’s
Was it an electric tow truck? The article doesn’t say.
And as a side note, EV owners should accept towing from electric tow trucks only. Refuse to be towed by any other vehicle! It’s all part of saving the Erf.
Then he should have been experienced with preparing for hours of no sources of power. LOL
No tickee no chargee
In this case, kirovorts.
