As it becomes increasingly obvious that homeschoolers do significantly better than victims of government “education” on every academic metric, apologists for the public-school system often fall back on their “socialization” mantra.
But under its true definition, “socialization” is hardly something to be desired. And under the commonly held understanding of socialization — gaining certain desirable social skills — the data show clearly that home-educated children outperform public school students on every key indicator.
Before examining the issue of “socialization,” it helps to define the term itself. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it is “the process whereby an individual learns to adjust to a group (or society) and behave in a manner approved by the group (or society).”
Contrast that with the biblical command that Christians “be not conformed to this world,” or that they are to be “not of the world.” Throughout the Scriptures, God repeatedly makes clear that His people are

It's my position that the benefits of home-school out-weigh any such concerns by a large margin. There are plenty of activities available to parents and their children to allow home-schooled students to develop social skills. The difference is that the parents are in charge of which "skills" their children are going to be encouraged to embrace.
I’m simply going to answer the title question: “Is ‘Socialization’ A Valid Reason For Subjecting Children To Godless Indoctrination By Government-Run Schools?”
I have two answers, the first being the government as founded as being of the people, by the people and for the people. The answer is NO.
The second answer is for today’s government as changed to of the party, by the party and for the party. The answer is YES, children must be indoctrinated in order for the party to stay in power.
That party is the Democrat modern version of the CPUSA. When the RINO’s tag along for the monetary bennies, it’s called the Uniparty.
Schools run by the government have no place in a free nation. Period.
When did public school become the only means of socialization of children? What about:
Church
Clubs and lessons, such as tap and ballet classes at a local studio, or the myriad classes available at the average YMCA
Non-school affiliated sports teams and activities
Group field trips, or group activities facilitated by a local home school organization
Camps
Send you children to Caesar for Education, don’t be surprised if they come back Romans.

No.
The single biggest reason to homeschool is to avoid their socialization.
EXACTLY!
We HS’d our 8 kids and when growing up always they were noted by adults about how mature they were. How they easily intermix with people of ALL ages, not just their peers. And how they were relatively uninfluenced by peer pressure.
All today are notably successful in their careers. On their own they have 8 degrees: 2 Summa Cum Laude’s, 1 w/Distinction that should have been Magna Cum Laude (ALL A’s at UVA!), 2 - engineers (ME & SE), and 2 pilots. 3 marathoners (I only did half’s & 10k’s). Now 34 to 48 years old, 5 grandchildren...more coming......
All the amazing Grace of God!
Whole socialization issue is 100% BOGUS!
One of biggest benefits is far less influence of peer pressure.........
Liberalism makes one STUPID........Our educational indoctrination centers teach:
they are taught that there is no point in faith because there is no god
they are taught that there are more than two genders
they are taught that they are victims
they are taught that successful people are bad
they are taught that people cause climate change
they are taught that the 2nd amendment endangers lives
they are taught that the united states is a racist, sexist, country
and they are trained to believe that anyone who lives by any sort of moral code is evil and stupid
Liberalism is PURE EVIL!!!!
They are taught that they are equal
Amen. This is how it is with my niece. Homeschooled and far ahead of her peers academically. Has friends her age, but outgoing and engages in conversation with anybody at an adult level. (was never "baby talked" to as a wee one).
I taught CCD scripture to 12 yr olds for many years. No doubt the homeschooled children were better at almost everything. They knew how to interact with adults, they were more curious and they could state ideas both verbally and in writing. Most of the kids were from the public schools and didn't know how to make the most simple logical thoughts.
Our director of education was a public school teacher and she treated the home schoolers shamefully. She'd also repeat the “socialization” fantasy to the kids. The kids knew she was lying
I would say that children should not learn “socialization”, in the sense given, but rather “social skills”: how to interact and communicate with others.
Being able to hold conversations is a social skill. Being able to persuade is a social skill. Being able to make friends is a social skill.
Kids need social skills. It’s the Elites who want them “socialized”.
Speaking as a father who homeschooled three kids, there are plenty of activities that you can get kids into where they can meet other kids: sports teams, after school activities, and just hanging out with other kids.
Another Reason to Homeschool
(This time an article on many of the positive reasons to do so.)
The right to keep and bear arms is a natural right. It pre-exists the Constitution. It comes from God. There is also a strong positive correlation between survival and not being a victim, with firearms ownership. However, support for gun ownership shouldn't rest on that positive correlation, because natural rights arent dependent upon utilitarian analysis.
Same with homeschooling. Even if HS'ed kids were of average academic prowess, or if they didn't get doctorates, or even if there was a positive correlation with being homeschooled and drug use or incarceration, we should STILL be defending the right to homeschool. It is a PLENARY right of a parent to homeschool, not anchored to any statute or benevolent government or p-value.
I have seen plenty of HS'ed kids who aren't scholars, or math or legal experts. But they sure are well-behaved, recognize right from wrong, and tend to distrust government. Which explains why "socialization" is the first refuge of anti-homeschooling scoundrels.
You said it perfectly. Thanks.
Home schooled for 13 years, same result as yours.
A child cannot socialize another child. I have friends who were turned into Marxists by childhood bullies and mockers.
A child cannot socialize another child.
Historically, children were socialized by hanging out with parents and other adults, who taught them how to behave in ways that brought them into adulthood.
