Controversial Gillette Ad – Toxic Masculinity {zero long term effect on sales}
Audionetwork ^ | 23 June 2021

Posted on 04/14/2023 8:40:22 PM PDT by Cronos

Gillette shocked millions of viewers worldwide with their ‘We Believe: The Best Men Can Be’ commercial. The advert looks back to the brand’s ‘The Best A Man Can Get’ commercial from way back in 1989, rephrasing its tagline to ask the question: Can men do better?

Touching on topics such as the #MeToo movement, the male gaze, the media’s portrayal of women and gender stereotypes, the ad encourages the audience to embrace a new age and suggests that men should hold themselves accountable for toxic masculinity. Aptly, the orchestral track amplifies the serious tone of the ad and underlines the brand’s stance on the issue.

..According to the chief financial officer of Gillette’s owners, P&G (Procter and Gamble), it didn’t. According to CNN Business, after the commercial aired, Gillette sales were in line with pre-campaign levels, by which we can infer that it didn’t make any difference, either positive or negative, to sales.

That was a blip. They didn’t press it, and nobody made a big deal about it.

"I tried one of those double edged razors, the type pictured above, and I thought I was going to cut my throat. Couldn’t get the hang of it."

Safety razors are easy to learn how to use and much cheaper if you buy the blades in a lot of a hundred (15 cents versus a dollar). You will Knick yourself at first, but the learning curve is pretty shallow. There are youtube videos if interested.

OBTW, I learned how to use a straight razor by watching youtube videos. That was a steep learning curve.

I have a memory longer than a gnat’s, so no, I will not be buying any Gillette razors or P&G products.

I quit using Gillette after the stupid ad and never went back. I also continue to enforce my boycott of NFL.

I now shave with obsidian blades that I punch out every morning from a core of inclusion-free Mayan obsidian.

They owned us for a few years before P&G bought us and they were awful! We all hated them. The only good thing I got out of them was a decent pension.

I make a point to dissuade others and personally have avoided Gillette products since that ad. I use Barbasol or store brands cream and certain disposables work just fine for me.

Same here. Stopped using their products.

No effect on sales? Hmmm. Are they still running those ads?

They seem to be saying that Gillette sales have returned to the same level as 2019. That its trans add had no effect.

I hate to pull simple math on people….. but….
2019 was a big economic year for the US as Trump policies were having a positive effect. The dollar was strong, no inflation. The US dollar had roughly nearly twice the buying power, and costs for goods and services were steady and predictable. Worker production was high. That means that Gillette was probably making money.

Now, they have returned sales to 2019. Each worker cost at least a third more and are less productive. The cost for simple supplies to make things has practically doubled, and the money they make has less and less purchasing power. So returning to 2019 levels is actually a disaster.

Count on the media to put lipstick on a pig.

What complete, utter bullsh*t.

Hold myself accountable?

Hell, I'm DAMN' PROUD of my "toxic masculinity!" I even BRAG about it!

They can take this modern progressive liberal bullspit, shine it up real nice, turn it sideways and stick it straight up their tranny loving candy asses!

“I also continue to enforce my boycott of NFL.”

Same here.

We subscribed to Netflix. Stopped. We switched to Hulu. Stopped.

When college football begins anew, we may try Sling TV. If we have to miss a few games that we want to watch, that’s all right. Ever since coach Saban led some BLM run through campus, I’ve been thinking of disengaging myself from college football.

There are many other and better ways to spend time and money.

“Bic is better than Gillette.”

I switched to Bic. Three blade disposables work just fine for me.

All of these companies try to tell us that boycotts don’t make any difference. Of course they would say that! I don’t believe it for a minute.. I think that you are exactly right about them shuffling numbers. And they pay these content creators to write articles that say the brand is fine and no one stopped buying their stuff. It’s all marketing.

“I haven’t seen an impact to Gillette’s volume sales or revenue.”

I wonder about market share.

To help reinforce a point. The “big three” automakers, Ford, GM, Chrysler (RIP), may make as much money (adjusted for inflation) as ever. Just imagine what their revenue would be if they still had the US and worldwide market share that they had in 1960.

Gillette sales should be increasing in line with population growth. If they are flat, that’s nothing to crow about.

It seems to be very important to large corporations (and a chunk of “Freepers”, including quite a few with suspicious join dates) to tell us that boycotts and bad press doesn’t make any difference. The media doesn’t run any story without a purpose. What might that purpose be...?
