Report: DeSantis Donors, Supporters Begin to Question if He Should Run in 2024 or Wait Until 2028

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s donors and supporters are beginning to question if the potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate should run in the next election cycle — a bid that would put him against former President Donald Trump — or wait until 2028, according to reports.

According to a report from NBC News, donors and supporters of DeSantis are having second thoughts on the prospect of the governor’s potential presidential bid. Per the report, one main issue seems to be the governor’s ability to take Trump — who has been criticizing the governor for months — head on.

Per the report:

At a Sunday luncheon following the annual Red Cross ball in Palm Beach, Florida, a group of 16 prominent Republicans, described by one attendee as a mix of DeSantis backers and Trump “skeptics,” discussed misgivings about the governor’s standing for the future if he tussles with the former president.

One attendee told the outlet that these individuals believe that DeSantis’s future is better secured without facing Trump directly this election cycle.

“He will get scarred up” by the former president, according to the attendee.

The report also highlighted the newfound hesitancy among some of DeSantis’s backers, including what NBC News described as “conservative billionaire shipping goods magnate Richard Uihlein” and his wife, who gave roughly half a million in contributions to DeSantis’s reelection campaign. NBC News, citing someone “familiar with the strategy” around their spending, said, “The brakes are pumped,” in part, due to DeSantis’s waning status in recent surveys. And, indeed, Trump has continued to grow in survey after survey, even garnering 50 percent or more as DeSantis appears to lose momentum, particularly following the news of Trump’s forthcoming indictment and what some conservatives view as the governor’s insufficient response.

Meanwhile, recent polls demonstrate a boost for Trump as DeSantis’s figures drop or remain stagnant. For instance, a Harvard/Harris survey released this week found Trump leading the hypothetical 2024 GOP primary field by 26 points over DeSantis. This week’s Morning Consult survey told a similar story, with Trump expanding his lead over DeSantis to +28 percent in the last week alone.

The Democrats and RINO Republicans want a nasty primary fight between Trump and DeSantis that destroys both of their Presidential chances forever.

Trump is definte one term President and DeSantis is the current best choice to follow Trump after another solid term as Florida gov.

DeSantis would even be a great VP choice for Trump.

DeSantis has recently proven he is not ready for the top job.

We can’t afford to “wait” til 28. Trump can’t win again. I don’t know if DeSantis can but I know Trump can’t. We can’t afford 4 more years of the crapshow we have now.

It would seem to me that it’s simplicity itself to let Trump play out. One way or another this is it for Trump. DeSantis is young, he’s got the time. Why would anyone try to stop or hijack the Trump train? This is why I’ve begun to suspect that DeSantis, who I liked, was put up by someone to take out Trump.

Sooooo....how can DeSantis be "stagnant" when the 2024 election is 18 months away and he hasn't even announced his candidacy yet?

Just more wishcasting by the usual suspects...

“We can’t afford 4 more years of the crapshow we have now.“

As things stand now no Republican can win in two years which means we’ve got six years of the crapshow coming at least.

If Biden is the nominee, either could or DeSantis could win. I had been okay with Trump and DeSantis having a good competitive primary, and supporting either as nominee, and I thought that Trump accusing DeSantis of being a groomer was bogus.

However, DeSantis' team picks reads like the Masthead of the NR Never Trump issue, and his recent statements don't give me confidence that he knows how close to the brink we are.

As usual, DeSanctimonious supporters, and DeSantis himself, pretending he isn't running thinking the rest of the base is too stupid to notice that he is.

DeSantis needs 4 more years to finish the job in Florida. Support Trump, get his endorsement for 28 and be done with it.

Best ticket would be Pompeo/DeSantis.

And don't start with the CIA garbage...he was appointed and held it for a little over a year when he was appointed as Secretary of State...a position in which he excelled.

He has some experience that DeSantis simply doesn't have.

I’ve always thought he should team up with Trump and support him in 2024 and then run for the Presidency in 2028 after finishing another term as Governor in Florida. And, I think that was DeSantis’ original plan. However, the establishment donors of the GOP somehow managed to convince him differently and advised him to separate himself from Trump, and it appears he is going to run in 2024. I think it is a bad decision on his part.

Take a look at the consultants, GOP think-tanks and groups, and politicians who are supporting DeSantis. That should give conservatives pause when it comes to supporting DeSantis in 2024. The more I hear from them, the more unsure I am of even supporting him in 2028. Hopefully someone else will emerge more worthy of my support by then. With DeSantis, we would be returning to the Bush/Cheney/Romney/McCain GOP era of governance.

Some of us have been saying from day one that we should let Trump finish his job and then elect DeSantis.

DeSantis could have been Vice President in 2024 and President in 2028. Now thanks to petulance, immaturity and accepting the influence of neo cons, he will never hold either office. Sadly he had real potential and could have played a significant role in the restoration of the American nation. All hope literally now lies with Trump.

I think there are 3 declared candidates so far, and DeSantis isn’t one of them. Still, it’s RD who Trump is focused on. If DeSantis isn’t viable why would Trump pay him any attention?
