Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered a number of improvements in access to mental health care on Thursday to reduce suicides in the military, but held off on endorsing more controversial recommendations to restrict gun and ammunition purchases by young troops, sending them to another panel for study.
An independent committee in late February recommended that the Defense Department implement a series of gun safety measures, including waiting periods for the purchase of firearms and ammunition by service members on military property and raising the minimum age for service members to buy guns and ammunition to 25.

His orders reflect increasing concerns about suicides in the military, despite more than a decade of programs and other efforts to prevent them...

Cut out that CRT ‘hate Whitey’ B.S. and stop worhipping and pandering to all things LGBT***.
Bbbbbbut only the police and military should have guns.
Almost useless. On my tour in the 70s with the 2ID, we had two suicides. Both personnel used guns and ammunition they had been issued while on guard duty.
Seems like Lloyd was losing some sleep over this one. Afraid of being fragged Lloyd, huh?
They’ve go to to get those guns out of the military.
It’s the only way to prevent deaths.
Wait, what’s the military for again? Diversity? Inclusion?
When you join the US Armed Forces you relinquish at least a few rights that you had before you enlisted.I’m probably in the minority here on FR but I’m inclined to support a reg forbidding gun ownership on a military installation. Yes,it’s crazy in a way,but....
First thing VA asks is “do you want to hurt yourself or somebody else?”
If I wanted to either of those I would not be there for my yearly physical or what ever.
I’m pretty sure I was instructed how to kill other people and not myself.
I really appreciate the improvements in VA care in the last few years.
We had private firearms everywhere, WestPac Deployment, Home Port Training, yards, drydock, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, New Zealand, Australia (when they were Nations).
Must be a new thing.
While I disagree with the VA’s use of language, thanks to President Trump, they are trying to heal and serve Veterans now, and I am grateful.
Volunteered at Walter Reed during the Afghan war on the amputation war.
My respect for our military went through the roof and will NEVER come down.
The best part was the “grads” coming to visit, strutting down the halls with their prosthetics proudly exposed.
They would go talk to guys who were totally devastated at the lost of their body parts (Who wouldn’t be?)
As they were talking to them they would say “We gotta go soon. We’re going wind surfing on the Chesapeake Bay. Next year you our coming with us.”
They made an amazing difference!!
But we are trading social media for daily social interaction. (Live in a neighborhood with tons of kids. Only see them on the bus stop and Halloween, but NEVER playing outside.)
Ain’t gonna end well.
The military needs to ban guns among soldiers. They are icky and dangerous!
Pretty soon we are going to have a military without guns.
Lessee…at age 24, I was trained, evaluated and certified by the Air Force to launch many ICBMs with big booms on top but wouldn’t be able to buy a Ruger 10/22 .22LR rifle at the base exchange??
I see what the left is trying to do here:
“If our military people cannot own guns until they are 25 then surely no civilian should be allowed to own guns.”
I was that at the age of 18 on Titan II crew. Our BX didn't sell firearms and couldn't even order them. I bough mine downtown.
Yeah, this will do wonders for recruiting.
...how is DoD going to make every gun shop owner verify if someone young-looking is in the military before (not) selling to them?
_______
They’ll have the ATF change the Form 4473 to add a question, “Are you a member of the military?”
