Chicago’s next mayoral election is quickly approaching, scheduled for the 28th of this month. Most of the polls indicate that the incumbent mayor, Lori Lightfoot, is not doing well and she might not be given another term. That wouldn’t be a terribly surprising result, given the soaring crime rates and the generally decrepit state of the Windy City these days. If that’s the case, who will replace her? Interestingly enough, one of the current frontrunners is a man named Paul Vallas. What makes him unique among Chicago Democrats is his history of being opposed to abortion and his promises to crack down on crime. But can someone like that really be elected in a liberal stronghold? (ABC7 Chicago)
Chicago mayoral candidates are touting dueling endorsements as Paul Vallas comes under fire for his Democratic credentials and past statements opposing abortion.
Several recent polls suggest Vallas is one of the frontrunners in the mayor’s race , so it’s no surprise he’s coming under attack, but it’s also an indication that this race will be rough and tumble in its final three weeks.
“When you’re a frontrunner you’re always going to become the focus, particularly when people don’t have specific recommendations to make or have anything of substance to offer,” Vallas said.
One of the other candidates, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, has been running attack ads against Vallas. He dug up a clip from some years ago where Vallas describes himself as “more of a Republican than a Democrat” and saying that he’s personally opposed to abortion. Garcia is accusing him of not being a “real” Democrat and claims that Vallas would be “dangerous” for Chicago. Really? More dangerous than, say… stopping your car at a red light for more than ten seconds?
Vallas has now received the endorsement of both the Chicago Tribune and the Fraternal Order of Police, which is rather remarkable. The Chicago Sun-Times has run a number of articles on this guy, listing all of the progressive liberals who are freaking out about Paul Vallas. They’re accusing him of having trodden upon the rights of workers in previous positions he’s held and wanting to outlaw abortions. There are probably a couple of them calling him a satan worshipper by now. In other words, all of the right people hate him.
Chicago certainly needs some fresh blood in the mayor’s office because the city is seriously circling the drain at this point. I would expect Vallas to promote himself as someone who personally opposes abortion but wouldn’t seek a legislative remedy to it for everyone. And he’s running on the issue of crime and promising to rebuild the police force. I doubt many people – even Democrats – will try to tear him down over that. That’s particularly true of anyone who has been carjacked which, by now, is a significant portion of the electorate.
On an unrelated note, if you plan on watching the State of the Union speech tonight, check back here for David Strom’s liveblogging post. There will likely be plenty of whoppers sprinkled in throughout Biden’s celebration of his many “accomplishments” and you’ll have the chance to call them out!
I didn’t think the Democrat party allowed such people in their party.
No such animal exist as a “Pro-Life, Pro Cop” demonrat.
Is this Paul Vallas a DINO or is this just a campaign ad disguised as political commentary?
BeetleJuice ain’t goin’ nowhere till its Big Daddy has a suitable demonic replacment.
As long as the weekly kill count stays up, the BeetleJuice is safe. /s
“Could Chicago be about to elect a pro-life, pro-cop Democratic mayor?”
It depends on who is counting the votes.
Nope, not gonna happen.
I wasn't aware he was "against" it in the first place. If he had been REMOTELY "pro-life" in any of his past campaigns (going back to 2002 when he ran against Blago and Roland Burris), it would have killed him in the RAT primary.
Most likely, he is "against" it the same way Joe Biden and Dick Durbin are, e.g. "I PERSONALLY don't agree with it, BUT... I will blindly rubber stamp whatever Planned Parenthood tells me to, 100% of the time anyway..."
Who’s the most conservative candidate, in that race? I agree that, if Vallas were conservative, we should have heard it at least 15 years ago.
A better question would be "which of the Marxists running is the least Marxist?"
Johnny LoGalbo is running for Chicago mayor, as a write-in candidate, and he’s not liberal. He filed enough signatures, and someone filed an objection because he filed an old version of one of the forms, although it’s the form that a Chicago Board of Election Commissioners told him to use. He wants to cut tax rates, hire police officers, and tell them to help ICE. He’s pro-2nd Amendment. He was endorsed by Chad Koppie and Vincent Romano.
I’d love to see LoriLighthead lose. If John Dillinger was around, she would make him the police chief.🤓
Filing closed a month or more ago. She has 4 challengers that poll in double digits.
It sounds like Vallas is one of the those “personally pro-life” types. Allegedly he once said he’s “more of a Republican than a democrat” and that’s probably true, if he was in New England he would run as a RINO. But of course he has to tout he’s a “lifelong democrat” to attract votes.
His latest ad touts “right to choose” (pissed off my mom) and the enforcing the illegal gun law but lets not make the election a litmus test on abortion, it’s legal in this state. And the gun ban will be overturned. This election is about getting a half-decent, non-insane Mayor that won’t keeping wrecking the damn city.
I think Willie Wilson is probably to Vallas’s right (it’s hard to tell, Willie is weird) but it looks like Vallas has a great chance to win. Unless the polls improve for Wilson I will vote for Vallas, we CAN’T have a Lori/Chuy or Chuy/Johnson or Lori/Johnson runoff.
Lori is the worst mayor in history.
Ping to 35
I think she’s gone, it’s a question of which challenger wins. She may very well come in third (and not make the runoff) or even forth.
But keep in mind two of her challengers, Chuy Garcia and Brendan Johnson might be WORSE than her. She’s attacking Johnson from the right on policing.
Latest poll shows a statistical tie between Garcia (Bernie Sanders supporter who might have gang ties) Lightfoot and Vallas (decent).
So Vallas is “personally pro-life” like I’m personally pro-infanticide. Kill ‘em, Hoover ‘em, chop ‘em up, put ‘em in a salad, eat ‘em. Freeze them for a later snack, etc. But I’d never force my views on the public and would vote pro-life. Which is a more sane position ?
Lightfoot has zero morals. She will win if she has to fill out the blank ballots herself.
Hochul turned out to be far worse than cuomo, which I didn’t think was possible.
The never the democrats throw one of their own under the bus, there’s a reason for it and it’s never a good thing.
