Impy, you make a valid point that objectively speaking, Vallas is probably the "least bad" RAT, but IMO that says more about how godawful the other RATS are. Most of 'em are militant commies. I agree Lightfoot is probably toast, though. She won the runoff last time because she was "Not Preckwinkle" (whom most voters rightfully despised) and she did indeed turn out to be "Not Preckwinkle". She's way worse!

It's also very unlikely any openly "R" candidate (someone who publicly and clearly identified as a "Republican") would make it thru a runoff in Chicago, even if they were the world's biggest RINO (Linc Chaffee type "Republican"), as merely having an "R" next to their name is probably radioactive to a LOT of Chicago voters. That being said, in an ideal world, an actual DECENT right-of-center "Independent" candidate COULD make it into a two-way run off. Paul Vallas is not that guy, no matter how much this puff piece article wants to PRETEND he is. It's sad that even a far-left, 100% RAT controlled city like San Fransicko can still field an ACTUAL Republican for Mayor, but Chicago can't or won't.

I don't think "pro-life" (news to everyone, including him, that he'd EVER be identified as "pro-life") Vallas will govern any differently than the rest of the RAT field on abortion. His ads pretty much make it clear that is hardcore taxpayer funded abortion on demand. He MAY be SLIGHTLY better than the other card-carrying RATS on a handful of other issues. Honestly though, I've been following this guy for 20 years, and his overall ideology is probably LESS conservative than the "conservative" RAT that recently got elected Mayor of NYC, and we KNOW how that guy turned out. I strongly suspected the puff pieces touting Adams as a "conservative" RAT were B.S., and that's been proven abundantly clear.

My parents used to say Eugene Sawyer was the last decent RAT mayor of Chicago. Apparently unlike his predecessor Harold Washington being a BLACK Mayor, Sawyer was a humble, soft-spoken guy who just wanted to be mayor for everybody (I'm really too young to remember anything about what Sawyer was like when he was in power from '87-'89) His son Roderick Sawyer is running this time around, but sadly I've heard no evidence that the younger Sawyer is remotely conservative. He's probably more of a traditional black Chicago RAT, but meh, I honestly don't know.

I'm glad I'm not a Chicago voter, because its like choosing between whether you want cancer or AIDS.

The only good thing I can say about the mayoral race is that at least its evolved into an hotly contested crowded field that anyone can win, in contrast to the Daley Jr. and Sr. eras, where they were effectively Mayors-for-Life and faced only token "opposition" every four years.

It would be neat to have an actual Republican on the ballot but what would it really serve under this election system other than taking votes from a sane democrat that actually has a chance to win? Look at 1987 when most Republicans voted for (future Republican) Fast Eddie V. If that race was close the actual Republican nominees’ 4% could have been critical.

I can’t imagine a “center-right indie” winning. LA had a RINO back in the 90s and NYC had Rudy and then Gloomberg. But Chicago? Even if they don’t ID as Republican. The democrat would have to be a real extremist and totally alienate the business community. Like a white super progressive fruit who has little appeal to blacks or something.

Adams was actually a Republican back when but seemed to be coronated as the choice of city blacks without issue, I probably would prefered Yang over him.

Adams seems to be a moron, I definitely have a higher option than that of Vallas.

FFS it would NOT take much for Vallas or Wilson to end up as the best Mayor in City History by default. We just need to avoid the worst horsecrap. Chuy-Lori? Or God forbid Johnson who may be worse?

Daley? I’m sad to say I rather miss him, the city was better off. Call it the Saddam Hussein effect.

And yeah abortion is legal in IL and it’s staying legal as long as it’s up to state, a pro-life Mayor wouldn’t change that (you’d learn quickly that Chi actually has more of a WEAK MAYOR system). This election is about whether street scum are going continuing wrecking what’s left of this city.

I have zero qualms voting for Vallas over Lori and Chuy. Voting for Rahm to stop Chuy (GOP voters were his margin of victory) and for Lori to stop Pop Tax Bitch, now that was painful.
