California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency before a bomb cyclone packing heavy rains and hurricane-force winds barreled ashore Wednesday night.
Wind gusts of up to 70 mph were expected to shake much of central California, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Fox Weather reported.
More than 200,000 homes and businesses were without power early Thursday, according to poweroutage.us.
The extreme weather is expected to continue into the morning, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for areas such as Santa Cruz, where flooding is a major concern.
Coastal areas could see between 5 and 8 inches or rain, while mountainous regions will face 8 to 12 inches in some spots, according to Fox Weather.

70 miles an hour? That’s called Monday in Florida during hurricane season. That’s a hurricane 1 barely.

Shouldn't they be happy with the wind, to power the wind mills?
They should have electricity stored for a year, oh that's right, you can't store electricity.

70 miles an hour? That’s called Monday in Florida during hurricane season. That’s a hurricane 1 barely. True, but a lot of California's structures aren't built for hurricane level winds, even that low. OTOH, there is a good part of the country that would suffer significant damage in a 6.0 earthquake that much of California would deal with just fine. Speaking as someone who lived in California all my life until four years ago when we moved to Texas.

I remember being in Sacramento building a big project and smiling when a “giant storm” was reported and discussed when in the midwest we would hardly have noticed its passing.

Look it up.
Apparently the term "bomb cyclone" has been round since the 1940s among meteorologists.
Only in the last few years have they used it with the general public to scare us and enhance ratings.
