After indulging in a Thanksgiving feast, Americans are waking up and heading to the stores in search Black Friday bargains — but this year inflation is weighing on shoppers heavier than last night’s turkey.
In Chesterfield, Missouri, on Thursday evening, there were no customers lined up behind the barricades set up outside the Best Buy in anticipation of lines for doorbuster deals.
“I see nothing. I’m surprised,” Jeremy Pritchett told news station Fox2Now. “Normally, it’s wrapped all the way around the building, today no one.”
Sky-high prices for food, rent, gasoline and other household costs have taken a toll on consumers, leaving many of them reluctant to spend unless there is a big sale and are being more selective with what they will buy — in many cases, trading down to cheaper stuff and less expensive stores.
Cash-strapped shoppers are also dipping more into their savings, turning increasingly to “buy now, pay later” services like Afterpay that allow users to pay for items in installments, as well as running up their credit cards.

It’s also because Black Friday has turned into Black November with sales starting in late October
they put the expectation way up here...knowing that it cannot be obtained...but 10 to one...because of on line shopping...it always exceeds REAL expections.
Numbers from the Government are often doctored, in fact inflation is running over 20% for many items..2023 will bring much higher inflation and turmoil..
For every DemoRat or RINO voter with TDS, enjoy the pains of high inflation. They got what they voted for but rejoice. Orange Man gone - and apparently their buying power too.
I’m assuming because I’m White I’m not allowed to participate.
And when I say crowded, I don't just mean people. The aisles are even more crowded than normal with all the junk stacked in the center aisles. You can barely move a cart around those things...
Hubby was out and about this morning in our Upstate NY neck of the woods. He happened to go through what passes for a retail sector around here.
No lines.
No traffic.
Parking lots not close to being full.
You couldn’t tell it’s Black Friday.
You probably wouldn’t get a cashier these days.
You’d stand in line waiting for customers to fumble through checking themselves out.
Can’t wait or all the news about shootings and black on White assaults
LOL - my parents called it that back when my siblings and I were little kids. Back when there were only the three network channels and a few independent ones.
Oh, we watched stuff and so did they, but excessive TV-watching was discouraged. And when we were stationed overseas for three years in the pre-AFNTV days, nobody watched TV. And we didn’t miss it.
I remember when my parents first got cable in the 80s, my dad said, “Oh great, we’ve gone from six channels of drivel to 70 channels of drivel.”
You have to look for the disclaimer of “inflation-adjusted” when looking at sales numbers.
Revenues are up...because it takes more dollars to purchase the same amount of goods and services than it did a year ago. Sales amount in dollars is revenue. The devil is in the details.
Just a few weeks ago, the market reacted to the “good sales numbers,” and the “not adjusted for inflation” disclaimer was merely a footnote...just before the election of course.
People still go into stores? Why? The store comes to me now.
Vader probably does his Christmas shopping on Alibaba.
This AM I bought a 10” hand truck wheel, a can of Deep Creep, a 14” monkey wrench, a set of knee pads and two 1 3/4 hose clamps, 106.00. Seemed inflationary to me.
Those are crowds of democrats picking up their kickback money...
The old days of Americans looking for great prices on gifts for their families is O-VAR.
“I did this” stickers (with Brandon and Harris pointing their filthy fingers in joy) should be on every empty store door. And later on every ‘going out of business’ store sign.
I’ve heard TV referred to as ‘idiot box’ for as long as I can remember (1950s).
The term was probably borrowed from other areas of life, perhaps jail or school punishment.
When I worked at Home Depot, there were 50 or more people outside when we opened. Most were Home Depot associates wanting to get in on the sales before they ran out.
