Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office no longer enforcing minor traffic violations [Charlotte NC]

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will no longer be pulling over drivers for non-moving violations.

Deputies said they will not be stopping drivers for things like inspection violations, driving with a revoked license, having window tinting that’s too dark or having a taillight out.

The sheriff’s office said this change in policy is part of an effort to address racial inequality that they said is apparent in traffic stops.

Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke with a community activist who is applauding this decision. Robert Dawkins, with Action NC, said officers used minor violations to profile people of color. He also said the previous policy was a heavy financial blow for lower-income citizens.

“A person that didn’t have the money this month to go and get their tags now has a harder barrier to go and get their tag, because they either had to go get arrested, paid their fine, pay the court cost and then eventually get it done,” Dawkins told Counts.

Many police reformers said they also support the change because they feel agencies often use the current standard to unfairly target minority communities.

“I’ve been in a situation where I’ve been harassed like that by the police. I’ve been pulled over about dumb things,” motorist Markish Johnson said.

Dawkins said his organization has been pushing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to make this change for years. He said now that the sheriff’s office has made this move, he hopes the police department will follow suit.

The sheriff’s office said stops for serious moving violations that threaten others will still be made. And if you are stopped for something like speeding and they notice that your headlight is out, you can still be cited.

Why would anyone bother renewing their inspection or their license plate? I guess if you will be traveling out of the county you'd want to.

In my little town I watch the cops stop people a lot, one of their favorite spots is visible from my window. But the monthly police report usually shows about 12 tickets a month actually written. Turns out they do a LOT of warnings and only give tickets to the worst offenders.

The cops are popular here, by coincidence.

While the police will not pull you over for having an expired tag, they will pull you over for speeding and add that citation.

This is all about profiling. Who are the people who are most likely to drive with broken tail lights, expired inspections, dark tints, etc.?

Why it would be racist to pull those people over. Leave them alone. Laws and rules are for white people, don’t you know.

Having been a City Manager, I can tell you from my experience, that my city’s police force rarely wrote tickets. Their primary focus was driving around, looking tough and unapproachable, and clocking the OT.

My community has hundreds of illegal aliens (eastern Washington farm community) and their easy to spot while driving. They intentionally drive 5 to 15mph slower than the posted speed limits as their vehicles wander from curb to centerline. We did a traffic count/speed study once on our main street that has posted speed limit of 25mph. It came back that the majority of traffic on that 1.5 mile stretch of road was driving 11 mph. We had several counts of over 60mph in the late evenings, early mornings, and those were all police vehicles!

We are defining our laws and culture down to the lowest amongst us. Racing to the bottom.

Charlotte NC is a cesspool of woke liberals. It is disgusting to see what this once great city was.

an effort to address racial inequality

Yet another admission that black people can't or won't maintain their cars properly and refuse to obey the law.

I’d like to know what the sheriff will do if there is a racial disparity in stops for moving violations.

I get that sometimes drivers are racially profiled. It happens. But the sheriff’s response to this should be to train all his deputies, and have dash cameras on all his cars. Then let the chips fall where they may, and no more of these mushy non-solutions.

Equity and equality are incompatible.

It is simply not fair to hold blacks up to the white man’s standards of performance and behavior.

The Sheriff needs to explain why:
The legislature enacted laws to prevent unsafe vehicles on public roads?
Why licenses are required for driving on public roads?
Why dark window tinting is illegal for driving on public roads?
Why functioning tail-lights are required for driving on public roads?

The answer is to prevent irresponsible drivers from harming innocent people and theselves. If that is not a concern, lobby the legislative body to repeal or revise the laws. Sounds like the Sheriff has reached the racist conclusion that Blacks are not capable of obeying the law, therefore the law must be abandoned. When a county’s chief LEO shows contempt for the Law and public safety, soon all laws will be impossible to enforce. He needs to be removed from office as a danger to the public.

racial inequality

Is it ok for whitey not to pay for inspections and renewals and not have to fix his taillight or does this only apply to other races?

Newsom just signed EoO that allows jaywalking-—anywhere—

What does that do to your vehicle insurance rates?

You are driving along-—and suddenly a pedestrian is in front of your car-—NO TIME to avoid-—NO SPACE to move over into-—You hit the person-—and YOU are on the hook for all costs.

Do insurance companies pull out???

NEWSOM is bent on creating chaos.
