Russian exodus shows no signs of easing as Ukraine war looms over recruits

The flow of Russian men of fighting age looking to leave the country persisted Tuesday amid fears the government would soon close its borders to stop those trying to evade President Vladimir Putin’s draft.

The mass exodus comes as Putin's government tries to energize Russia's faltering offensive in Ukraine, and looked likely to swiftly annex four occupied territories where referendums on joining Russia were being held.

The exit of military-age men began shortly after Putin ordered the mobilization of more troops last Wednesday to regain the upper hand in Ukraine. Russia’s defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, said a total of 300,000 people would be recruited.

But confusion over who will be called up and when has led to mass protests across the country, violence at draft offices, sold-out flights and chaotic scenes at border crossings.

New satellite images released Monday appeared to show a large number of vehicles lining up at Russia’s border crossings with neighboring Georgia and Mongolia.

Maxar Technologies, a U.S. defense contractor, said its imagery collected Sunday showed a large traffic jam at the Upper Lars border crossing between Russia and Georgia that likely extended beyond the 10 miles that the satellite could capture in a single image.

On Tuesday, the Russian state news agency Tass quoted Russian border officials as saying that around 3,600 passenger cars were waiting to cross into Georgia.

Russian media has also reported a rush of its citizens trying to enter Finland and Kazakhstan.

I am thinking this headline is much more telling... Russians are calling up the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense asking how to surrender, Ukraine says

Western MSM misrepresentation (lies) again. Those 300,000 being mobilized are prior military service. Stated clearly. Wake me up when Vlad fully mobilizes his 2-2.5 million, or when he starts conscripting 18-60 year olds and woman- like the Ukies.

Did not anyone remember Trump’s warning about fake western news?

The exact reason I am against all western MSM. Reporting bits of half truths to keep the money spigot opened to the current corrupted Ukie regime..

I have to agree with delta7. The NBC News article uses words like “draft” and “recruited” to imply that regular Russian citizens are being conscripted into military service. But as Putin and Shoigu have made clear many times, all of the 300,000 soldiers being called up are reservists with prior combat service.

We can’t keep people out and they can’t keep people in. Weird (topsy-turvey) world.

Prior to this nato war on Russia, I’d never seen people just shamelessly lying and posting fictitious garbage on the FR forum, The pay must be fairly good...

That’s what Putin announced, but it is not what the law itself says. They are starting with ex-military, but the Ukraine meat-grinder will get through them pretty quickly and the law allows them to order anyone to serve.

The Russians themselves are admitting that non-prior military service men are being called up but they are blaming it on subordinates going beyond Putin’s orders.

Exaggerations aside, do you believe that absolutely all the stories and testimonials about civilans being called are made up of whole cloth?

But as Putin and Shoigu have made clear many times, all of the 300,000 soldiers being called up are reservists with prior combat service.

First, the Russians themselves admit this is not what is happening, and that people without combat experience, and sometimes no military experience at all, are being called up. Putin and Shoigu claiming otherwise does not change that.

Second, where would Russia even get 300,000 combat vets in the first place? Especially when you consider all the categories excluded from this mobilization, and that a significant number of their combat vets likely were in the active force already. So what happens is that local authorities who can't fill the quotas they've been given with combat vets are just mobilizing ordinary guys to make up the difference.

Plus, Russia doesn't have a reserve system anything like ours. The vast majority of their "reserves" wouldn't even be IRR here. They'd be your fat 42 year old neighbor Sergei who did a couple of years 20+ years ago, and hasn't had any contact with the military since.

You can say Sergei is being mobilized, but to him, it's like he's being drafted.

They have to call up guys who don’t fit Putin’s criteria because 1) there aren’t enough who do, and 2) they don’t have an integrated reserve system that tracks all that information anyway. So local poohbahs are just picking dudes and sending them off.

I’ve come to the conclusion those here on FR pushing this war on Russia are completely insane.

There’s just no other way to put it.

this nato war on Russia

Wrong, dumbass

NATO never attacked or invaded Russia

but Russia attacked and invaded Ukraine

so it's a Russian war on Ukraine, obviously
