Summons delivered to eligible men at midnight. Schoolteachers pressed into handing out draft notices. Men given an hour to pack their things and appear at draft centres. Women sobbing as they sent their husbands and sons off to fight in Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The first full day of Russia’s first mobilisation since the second world war produced emotional showdowns at draft centres and even signs of protest, while it appears Russia could be considering far more than the 300,000 new conscripts claimed by the defence minister, Sergei Shoigu.
One woman in a small village in the Zakamensky region of Buryatia, in eastern Siberia, said she first felt something was amiss when the dogs began barking about midnight.
In a community of 450 people, the village head was walking from house to house, seeking to hand out more than 20 draft notices. As men gathered before departing the next morning, she said, some drank vodka, while others hugged and told each other to stay safe. Women cried and made the sign of the cross over the small minibus that carried them away.
“It’s not a partial mobilisation, it’s a 100% mobilisation,” said Alexandra Garmazhapova, president of the Free Buryatia Foundation, an activist group that has reported on the draft in the region. In the past day, she said, she and her colleagues had received and identified more than 3,000 reports of povestka, or draft papers, being delivered in Buryatia within just 24 hours of Vladimir Putin announcing the draft.
Despite assurances that Russia would be seeking men who had recently served in the army and had combat experience, activists pointed to a number of cases of men in their 50s receiving draft notices.

Exactly.
This is why we can’t have anything nice
Then stop playing the strawman game of sources you and others do when I post up my sources, dingus? You think!?
If Britain and France had shown some fortitude in 1938 and had told Hitler to pound sand there is a very good chance September 1, 1939 would not have turned out the way it did.
Even several of Germany’s generals said that if there had been pushback against Germany’s remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936, and a strong opposition to Germany in the Czech Crisis of 1938, Germany would have backed off.
“Then stop playing the strawman game of sources you and others do when I post up my sources, dingus?”
Ah, so posting sources that dispute yours is a strawman? You need to go back to school, son, and take a course in elementary logic.
Ah, so posting sources that dispute your WESTERN/US/UK/EU/NATO sources is are inefficient, no-go, etc.
Do you even think about the stuff you post up?
Seriously.
sounds credible.
guffaw!
“Ah, so posting sources that dispute your WESTERN/US/UK/EU/NATO sources is are inefficient, no-go, etc.”
You can post whatever the hell you want; and you do! Of course, when I post something that challenges your sources, you get the vapors and start name calling.
Russia used to have some very good operatives for its propaganda; it has really taken a downward slide with the likes of you.
He might want to learn it.
“It not works this way.”
Is that so, Boris?
You are truly a Tard. The are calling up some reservists, not conscripts. You obviously didn’t see Shoigu’s speech. He was clear that it is a mobilization of reservists, not “draftees”. There is no secret. Both Putin and Shoigu described what would be done. You can’t even get simple things right....or is it you don’t care to get things right? Which Soros/Neocon affiliate is paying you?
Looks like the despot of RuSSia is going to take his nation down into oblivion, just like the other despot did in 1945.
“Good luck outfitting, training, and kitting out the new cannon fodder.”
Give every soldier five rounds of ammo and every other soldier one of those WWII-era boat oar rifles. It’ll be just like Stalingrad.
Gotta be comforting to the conscripts to be sent into combat areas knowing the FSB and state security forces were executing POWs and civilians weeks before.
They’ll probably revolt.
It’s one thing when rebellious soldiers have bolt action rifles. It’s another when they have full autos and machine guns. The leadership will probably put minefields and machine guns behind them as Soviet leadership did.
This 100 year old criminal gang is really getting old. People have had enough.
I couldn’t agree more. The flurry of one-way flights out of Russia, along with protests across the country should be an indicator this “buildup” doesn’t have national support.
Yes.
But which Christmas?
Hindsight is always 20/20, the reason they didn’t was because the war 20 years earlier had bled France and England white. Nobody wanted a replay of that.
Keep in mind, over 19,000 British troops were killed in one day, first battle of the Somme, maybe 50,000 wounded. They’d seen this movie before, so to speak.
“he reason they didn’t was because the war 20 years earlier had bled France and England white. Nobody wanted a replay of that.”
All the more reason to nip it in the bud early. Did you know that in 1938 France had the largest standing army in the world?
It doesn’t work that way, that’s part of the human condition. Lots of people hoped that the spread of Bolshevism would be contained as well.
