I swear some people are looking at this with blinders on. When Putin got kicked out of Kiev people were saying it was his 3D chess to lose troops there and have them get cancer from Chernobyl. All part of his master plan.
Will Russia end up winning? Or partially controlling more land? Not sure...they could. But to say the past month has been anything but utter defeat is lying to yourself.

Nicholas also made the mistake of garrisoning St. Petersburg and Moscow with second-rate, demoralized units. Had he used elite units instead, things might have turned out differently.
I doubt if Putin will make that same mistake.

You don’t understand how the Russian reserves work. The guys who had experience of being deployed to actual war are preferred. They actually called to drills time to time. And nobody in their 40s are called, unless officers. From that I know they are all under 35 according to already compiled lists. The number of volunteers by far exceeds their numbers. In Tuva and Chechnya there is a real stampede by the recruiters, so many people want to fight. Thousands of volunteers arrive from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Assad used the Republican Guard to defend Damascus. The troops are Assad Loyalists. They probably saved his @$$ until he was able to get reinforcements from his allies (Hezbollah, Iran and Russia).
