With a national debate on the value of a college education smoldering, heads of postsecondary institutions in New Jersey are seeking to buck the national trend of declining enrollments.

The pandemic and its widespread effects helped bring college enrollment to its lowest levels in about 15 years in 2020, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Those declines continued into 2022, according to researchers at the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

This spring, center researchers estimated that 662,000 fewer students were enrolled in U.S. collegiate undergraduate programs when compared with spring 2021. The year-over-year drop of about 4.7% piggybacked on a 3.5% decrease seen the prior spring.

The result was a 7.4% overall decline, almost 1.3 million students, from spring 2020 to spring 2022.

Anthony Iacono, the County College of Morris president, said employers are asking school officials for recruits in health care, law enforcement and tech fields. However, Iacono is not sure where to find the students they need.

"Our question is where the heck is everybody?" he said. "They don’t want to go to work. They do not want to go to college. They don’t want to go to the service. Where are they going?"

...

As traditional postsecondary education has suffered continued declines, trade education at two-year schools saw considerable growth from spring 2021 to spring 2022, according to National Student Clearinghouse Research Center records.

I wonder if the drop is due to the lack of Chinese students?

“Where are they going”?

They are going on the government dole. Easy money, no work, no responsibilities.

Be a shame if they all went belly up and their endowments evaporated into the FJB.

..."No mention of vax mandates or discrimination against conservatives".

Also no mention of insane college tuition increases driven by government cheap/easy (now free due to JB) student loans.

During an American Association of Community Colleges conference this past spring, survey results showed most high school students are saying: "I know I need to do something after high school, but not necessarily college," Iacono said. "Many are saying, 'I think what I need I can get off YouTube or some on-demand format for quick skills to go to work'," he said. "We're dealing with a generation that’s saying, 'I don’t know if I need to go to college to be successful.'"

There is Hope!

For most of these schools there is nothing useful to learn that will enable you to make a better living IMO. learning a needed skill and starting your own business is better.

They don't want to go to work. They do not want to go to college. They don't want to go to the service.

Each of those institutions discriminates against men, especially straight white men. Why pay through the nose to go to college and get treated like a predator?

If you’re not going for STEM, why college. The other majors are a joke. Including law (of the woke variety, in any case). The only cure for woke law will be the upcoming CW-II.

The article doesn't seem to give any evidence that the decline in college enrollments in New Jersey is any worse than what is happening nationwide. But I can tell you that two major factors make the prospects very poor for the future of New Jersey colleges:

1. Demographics -- Fewer and fewer people with children can afford to live in New Jersey. The state's population would be in steep decline if it weren't for large numbers of immigrants.

2. College Costs -- New Jersey has always had a reputation for its ridiculously expensive colleges and universities. It has been known for years that schools in neighboring states are filled with students from New Jersey who simply find a better deal outside the state. Penn State and the University of Delaware were top destinations for my peers when I was in high school in New Jersey. The out-of-state tuition for some state schools around the U.S. is less than what New Jersey residents pay at state schools there.

The university began to die 60 years ago. People are now sensing it. Wokeness cost and irrelevance are factors today.

Joe doesn’t realize his loan forgiveness just hastened the end.

It’s all too expensive. Flagship public universities are the only way to go for in state tuition but even then it’s $120k for an undergrad degree. Four kids like I have? A cool half million dollars. And that the CHEAPEST option for a 4 year college.

Rutgers started the school year with forced masking again. I’m sure that might have something to do with it if other schools are doing the same there.

“Each of those institutions discriminates against men, especially straight white men. Why pay through the nose to go to college and get treated like a predator?”

And then if you are lucky enough to land a job with the government or a large corporation, you will be discriminated against again. Learn a trade, and/or start a small business and go John Galt.

Even worse, you spend money for four years and then just before you graduate you can be terminated based on some trumped-up charges filed by an anonymous snowflake.

No degree. A black mark that prevents you from attending other colleges. And you still have to pay back the loans.

Any conservative student applying to college should get a lawyer to draw up a contract that the university has to sign to make it very difficult to expel the student for all but the most egregious behavior.
