Why monarchy-rejecting America mourns Queen Elizabeth, too

So what can explain the depth of feeling, the palpable sense of loss and regret, in this superpower ex-British colony across the Atlantic at the death of Queen Elizabeth II?
Familiarity has something to do with it. Like most Britons, the great majority of Americans have never known any other British monarch; Elizabeth had met on equal footing with every president since Harry Truman.
Fame, and its cousin celebrity, is a factor as well: Her birth was news during the Coolidge administration; and when, in the middle of the Great Depression, her uncle King Edward VIII abdicated to marry an American, 10-year-old Princess Elizabeth suddenly found herself heir to the throne of the British Empire.
Mention “the British Empire” today and historical arguments ensue. Mention “the queen” and everybody over here knows who you mean.

Somewhat more subdued than the coverage of Diana’s death and significantly less obnoxious.

For the same reason that when your friend loses his wife you morn with him.
Even if you did not like her for some reason.
It is what you do for a friend if you are a decent person.

'Sacrifice, selflessness and strict attention to duty are always regarded as endangered virtues, especially among our governors. Still, this doesn’t quite explain her status in America. And therein lies a tale.'
Um, yes it does. It is precisely her personification of certain ideals of duty, selflessness and dedication that is so attractive to us. We have sadly few politicians now who exhibit those attributes; but we vaguely recall them and how very valuable they were to us, from our past.
(On the other hand, they did get 'familiarity' right. I said to my husband tonight that we always knew that she would die someday - but we didn't believe that she would.)

Someone sent me a copy of a Twitter post yesterday with this headline: “Queen Elizabeth II dies … Reggie Jackson taken into custody.” LOL.

A life of duty from barely past adolescence to death is something will never exist in our system. She had no aspiration for her role, no ambitions. It just was.
To: Tijeras_Slim
Yes. It was thrust upon her unexpectedly, and she had the mettle to take it on and do it right for 70 years.
(A story I’ve heard - not sure if I recall it correctly, or even if it’s true:
When Elizabeth and Margaret learned that their father would have to be King, they realized that Elizabeth would one day have to be Queen. Margaret said, “Poor You.”)

I'm glad I don't live in a monarchy but I have no problem at all with a Queen as decent and dignified as Elizabeth was.And I have no problem at all with Brits who are deeply saddened by her passing.
To: Rummyfan
A Queen who wore her country’s military attire in wartime. A great lady. RIP

Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden, et al.
I get your point.

Diana struck me as an entirely decent woman who had,in fact, been wronged by Charles. But she wasn't worthy of nearly as many tears as were shed for her....tears shed mostly,IMO,by leftists worldwide. Elizabeth was clearly a far more “substantial” woman than was Diana.
To: Rummyfan
She was loyal to her citizens for 70 years.
Biden can’t stay loyal to the US for 7 seconds.

The Brits seemed to welcome him, when he went back to London today. That’s all that really matters; and now he has the opportunity to prove himself.

You don’t have to be a royalist to mourn the loss of a great human being.
