A federal jury has found that a Democratic super political action committee (PAC) defamed Roy Moore, a former Republican sheriff and U.S. Senate candidate, in a television ad during his failed 2017 U.S. Senate bid in Alabama.
The Senate Majority PAC made a false statement about Moore that was defamatory, the verdict, returned on Aug. 12, states. The PAC also published the statement despite knowing it was false or acting “with reckless regard” as to whether the statement was false, the jury said.
Jurors also found that the Senate Majority PAC invaded Moore’s privacy.
They awarded Moore $8.2 million.
“I feel this is vindication and I give thanks to Almighty God and the jurors in this case for a great victory over our corrupt political system,” Moore said in a statement.
A lawyer representing the PAC didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Defamation
Moore won the 2017 Republican primary runoff election to replace Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), who then-President Donald Trump had tapped to be attorney general.
Ahead of the general election, a group linked to the Senate Majority PAC ran a 30-second advertisement nearly 1,000 times on television networks in Alabama that accused Moore of “soliciting sex from young girls” at a mall, according to the complaint. The claim was based on a report from The New American Journal, which cited anonymous sources and later said was inaccurately reported.
The ad also included quotes from news articles, such as “one he approached ‘was 14 and working as Santa’s helper.’” But those articles were not talking about soliciting sex.
The juxtaposition of the quotes were meant “to create the false impression that Judge Moore solicited sex from a 14-year-old Santa’s helper at the mall. The very source they cite in the ad refutes that statement,” the complaint stated.
The Senate Majority PAC said the accusations were baseless but U.S. District Judge Corey Maze, a Trump appointee, rejected multiple attempts to throw out the case, leading to the trial.
Failed Senate Bid
Moore lost the campaign by about 21,000 votes to Doug Jones.
Jones ran for a full term in office in 2020. Moore, Sessions, and former college football coach Tommy Tuberville were among the Republicans vying to face him.
Moore received the fourth-most votes in the Republican primary, which Tuberville won.
Tuberville easily defeated Jones, earning 60 percent of the votes.
The other U.S. Senate seat representing Alabama is up for grabs in the upcoming midterm elections.
Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who has been in office since 1987, is retiring.
Katie Britt, a former aide to Shelby, won the Republican primary over Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.). Britt faces pastor Will Boyd in the general election.

He was the Chief Justice of the state’s Supreme Court as I
recall.
Funny, no mention of that in the leading background materials.

Yep. And if you remember, Judge Moore was severely persecuted and attacked for simply hanging a carved monument of the 10 Commandments ( which he himself worked on ) in the Alabama Judicial Building.

Roy Stewart Moore (born February 11, 1947) is an American
politician, lawyer, and jurist who served as the 27th and
31st chief justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama from 2001
to 2003 and again from 2013 to 2017, each time being removed
from office for judicial misconduct by the Alabama Court of
the Judiciary. He was the Republican nominee in the 2017
U.S. Senate special election in Alabama to fill the seat
vacated by Jeff Sessions, but was accused by several women
of sexual misconduct and lost to Democratic candidate Doug
Jones.[1][2] Moore ran unsuccessfully for the United States
Senate in 2020.[3]
He was removed from that office twice, but the people didn’t
back that. Some of it was related to his defense of the
Ten Commandments in front of the courthouse.

Yes. I had forgotten it was inside. As I recall, didn’t he
offer to move it outside, and they refused that also?

Is Gloria Alred still in Alabama, helping her client hold Judge Moore accountable for what he did?
I think I remember her saying she would.

Easy Peasy. No problem funneling that amount of US taxpayer money through the Ukraine. Just a drop in the bucket.

That's great!
A jury awarded Gibson's Bakery $43 million for libel, to be paid by Oberlin College. Oberlin has lost every appeal so far, but Gibson's hasn't yet seen a penny of what they're owed. They won their case more than three years ago.

It was easy for liberals, Mitt Romney, and Mitch McConnell to attack him with a one-off race.

Mitch the Turdle sent 20 million of Senate campaign
funds to run tv ads against Judge Roy because
Moore vowed to vote against Mitch for leader.
Mitch will do anything to defeat candidates who
won’t support his role as leader.
Tuberville so far has not bent a knee to Mitch.
Too bad Judge Roy would be a lot better than Britt

Judge Roy was narrowly defeated because:
1. False charges of sexual misconduct; no credible evidence was brought forward and the charges went silent after the election. (He dated and married a legal adult who was about 15 years his Junior. This fact suddenly became a crime in eyes of many women-libers.)
2. Made enemies with the republican establishment, who then endorsed the democrat. He would have been difficult for McConnell to control.
3. He espoused strong traditional Christian values. This was too hard-lined for many in the agnostic mainstream, who can tolerate any type of behavior other than traditional Christian.
4. Likely voter fraud. He was leading by 7% and 5% in two separate polls taken just before the election. This lead was in spite of the barrage of outside-funded attacks from both Democrats and Republicans. Democrats bused voters from other states to places like Birmingham. Several precincts with about 100% turnout voted heavily for his democratic opponent (Jones).

Yes, what it the writers problem? Does he not know the difference between a Judge and a Sheriff? I don’t think Judge Moore was ever a sheriff and I don’t think there is such a thing as a “republican Sheriff”, its just Sheriff.

Lets be honest, from the prospective of most Alabamians prior to this election business...considered Moore to be more of a ‘nut’ than anything else. It’s only that they have so few quality candidates for Senate seats or Governor these days...that Moore rose to the top level rather quickly.
On the positive side, no one can accuse Moore of being corrupted or in some hanky-panky scandal (like Gov Bentley was).

You are accidently combining 2 events. He had a wooden carved plaque in his courtroom as a judge in Gadsden. The 10 Commandments monument in the Alabama Supreme Court lobby was carved in stone, not a huge monument but very heavy. Man I could share tons of stories about those days. I attended every rally held at the court during that fight and heard many great speakers (James Dobson, Alan Keyes, Jay Sekulo, etc) and then went to D.C. with a small group to protest there. I witnessed miracles...more than one. Amazing time in my life!

“Failed Senate Bid”
So, for $8M, the Democrats got a badly needed Senate seat (in a very, very, red state), and GREATLY empowered the RINOs to stop Trump’s agenda (by making the Senate nearly 50-50). I’d say it was a small price to pay for the Democrats.
As to Moore, he was an idiot in dealing with the issue, so he didn’t do the GOP any favors either.

5. He was an awful candidate.
