Zelensky Slams Amnesty International Over Report: 'Cannot Be Tolerated'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky savaged an Amnesty International report that accused his forces of endangering civilians by deliberately setting up bases in residential areas.

During his nightly video address to the Ukrainian people on Thursday, he accused Amnesty International of seeking to "shift responsibility from the aggressor to the victim."

The Amnesty report, titled "Ukraine: Ukrainian fighting tactics endanger civilians," was released on Thursday. It accused the Ukrainian military of having "put civilians in harm's way," while resisting the Russian invasion "by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas."

Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International's secretary general, accused Ukrainian forces of "violating the laws of war" in the report.

She commented: "We have documented a pattern of Ukrainian forces putting civilians at risk and violating the laws of war when they operate in populated areas.

"Being in a defensive position does not exempt the Ukrainian military from respecting international humanitarian law."

Amnesty clearly states Ukrainian soldiers should move out of residential areas to 'nearby woods' to not 'endanger civilians'. This is silly. US defenders of Bastogne during WW2 would be accused of war crimes by Amnesty, because they did not move to the nearby woods and instead put civilians in harm’s way by "establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas".

Viable alternatives were available that would not endanger civilians – such as military bases or densely wooded areas nearby, or other structures further away from residential areas

Don't worry we'll still mindlessly flood money to keep him and the war going indefinitely It doesn’t matter how many crimes they commit to people stupid enough to finance this mess

Guess Amnesty International needs to be canceled along with all political opposition parties in Ukraine. Its fully justified because Putin attacked Ukraine, making it quite impossible for Zelanski to do anything wrong.

Problem with most of you Zelensky fanbois is that you still think it it is WWII.

It isn’t.

Sorry Volo, but being attacked DOES NOT give one the right to use people as Human Shields and commit War Crimes, at least according to the Geneva Convention.

I noticed that also.

“Indict him for war crimes.”

The problem is that the people who wanted this war in the first place, and have given him over $100B to fight it, are the ones who run war crimes tribunals.

Yep. Just because Russia commits war crimes doesn’t give the Ukraine a pass to “even the score”.

And I suspect that a lot of the supposed war crimes were just Ukrainian factions using war as a cover to eliminate internal foes. Happens in every war.

AI would have had a stroke if it applied this reasoning to the Russians at Stalingrad in 1942 and 1943.

Agree, but has Amnesty International even reported on Russian war crimes. Perhaps that’s the case, really don’t know or remember.

Like I posted early on - if you don’t want your cities bombed, you declare them open cities.

You can’t whine about collateral damage to civilians if you make them “Fortress Cities” like Aachen or Breslau in World War II.

Amnesty International has hated the U. S. for the last 40
years. When the USSR still had the gulags, they would
trash the U. S. as being a this or a that, and not mention
the gulags.

It was known for it, and its credibility was shot long ago.

I think they are usually pretty even handed, though still wingnuts. There are a number of reports on Russian crimes at their site.
