The article is lying.
According to that same source the average annual wage is $87,557.
However even this is highly misleading on the high side, because it is a mean (mathematical average) and not a median (half above, half below).
The median hourly wage is $22.00 x 2080 hours = $45,760.

This is why committee assignments are important.
As a former congressional staffer, I can tell you that different congressional committees get varying degrees of actionable information. Commerce committee is the best. Veterans affairs is one of the worst, or at least it was that way back in the 1980’s.
Let’s say you are on the commerce committee. Not only will you be privy to inside information on government decisions that will effect stock prices, but lobbyists trying to buy you will provide you with “no loss” business deals. Actually, they rarely offer YOU these deals, they offer your wife, or daughter, or son, or best friend these deals. The sketchier the deal, the further you distance yourself from it.
This is on top of your salary and other perks.
Additionally, the folks back in the district will bend over backwards to “thank you” and do favors for you. Your kid will go to whatever school you want. Tuition? You’ll pay it, but then the school will employ or contract a friend of yours who won’t actually have to show up or do anything and pay them more than the amount of the tuition. That friend will then employ your wife - who won’t show up - and pay her what the school is paying him, less 10% or so.
Need a car when you are in town? A local used car dealer will lend you one off their lot, no charge.
Want to go to a nice restaurant for your anniversary? Make reservations via your staff who will be sure to say “Representative Smith needs a table for two at 8:00pm” and poof, there will be no check at the end of dinner. This actually led to an inadvertent “dine and dash” by my boss who just assumed he wasn’t going to get a check. Ooooppps.
