SALEM, Mass. — Police arrested a homeless man in connection with vandalism of the "Bewitched" statue in downtown Salem on Monday.

Police were called out to the intersection of Essex and Washington streets late Monday afternoon after a witness called in "saying someone was spray-painting the statue," said Salem police Lt. Dennis Gaudet

The bronze "Bewitched" statue, known and either appreciated or scorned by most Salem residents, honors famous "Bewitched" actress Elizabeth Montgomery as she sits on a broom with a crescent moon behind her.

Montgomery played TV witch Samantha Stephens in the show, leading many to identify the statue by simply calling it "Samantha." It's been the star of Lappin Park since its unveiling in May 2005, for better or worse.

When police arrived, a suspect fled on foot. Police pursued and "caught him, took him into custody, and he's under arrest," Gaudet said.

Kylynn Chambers, a 31-year-old homeless Salem resident, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and defacing property.

By 6:15 p.m., a private crew was out cleaning the paint off the statue, according to Gaudet.

I am so sick and tired of the current world mess that I have started watching old TV shows. They are interesting in so many ways....from Dragnet being a propaganda arm for the police to Robin in Batman being told to take drugs to decrease the size of his parts to keep them from showing in his costume

I think I will add Bewitched to the list.

It is bronze. Spray it down with alcohol paint remover. Then you can set it on fire. The paint will burn off and Salem can say that at least ONE witch was burned in Salem. All the others who pleaded “Not Guilty” were hanged. Those that pleaded “Guilty” were simply fined and given a prison term.

Or you can make the perp scrape the rest off with a tooth brush.
Just make sure the alcohol is methanol alcohol lest the perp try to lick it off.

Salem has an impressive maritime history and was quite important in the early days of our republic. But not enough tourists care about real American history. So Salem decided to cash in on the 1692 Witch trials and the modern fantasy of Wicca. The TV show is tangential to anything but they put up a statue for the heck of it.

Yep. I just saw a rerun of Bewitched in which Samantha and the boss’s wife were playing with a Ouiji board.

That same year, the board was mass manufactured by the Parker Brothers and sold over a million units.

The witch scare did not even occur in Salem. It was in Salem Village, miles away, in what is now Danvers.

Danvers later became the site of a huge mental asylum which was the model for HP Lovecraft’s Arkham Asylum, later borrowed by the Batman franchise as the Joker’s home.
