MEXICO CITY (AP) — The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has authorized Russian troops, planes and ships to deploy to Nicaragua for purposes of training, law enforcement or emergency response.
In a decree published this week, and confirmed by Russia on Thursday, Ortega will allow Russian troops to carry out law enforcement duties, “humanitarian aid, rescue and search missions in emergencies or natural disasters.”
The Nicaraguan government also authorized the presence of small contingents of Russian troops for “exchange of experiences and training.”
Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, told the Russian news outlet Sputnik that the measure was “routine.”
“We are talking about a routine — twice a year — procedure for the adoption of a Nicaraguan law on the temporary admission of foreign military personnel to its territory in order to develop cooperation in various areas, including humanitarian and emergency responses, combatting organized crime and drug trafficking,” Zakharova said.

Daniel Ortega is still around? That SOB should have taken a dirt nap in the ‘80s.

If we can muck around on their border, providing money to favored politicians, weapons, etc... in places that used to be part of their empire, I suppose its only fair that they should ignore the Monroe Doctrine and do the same near our borders.

Many folks don’t know that the Monroe Doctrine had two parts. We promised not to interfere in Europe. And we warned Europe not to interfere in the Americas.
We’ve ignored the first part for quite some time now. So as you noted, why shouldn’t Russia ignore the second part?

Everyone who thinks that, in response to this, the U.S. will soon begin shelling Nicaraguan infrastructure, rocket-bombing Nicaraguan cities, sending a 40-mile-long column of tanks to capture Managua, and holding referendums there to determine whether the local population -
many of whom can also speak English - want to become the 51st U.S. state, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND!
Nope, didn't think so!

Can you believe it? After his tyranical rule over the country the first time, the people of Nicaragua voted him back in (assuming he won legitimately). Only to have him repeat his repressive, tyrannical rule. Let the people of Nicaragua rot. They voted for him.

People tend to forget or never learned that the Monroe Doctrine also said that we’d stay out of Europe’s affairs. We turned our back on that in 1917 when we entered WWI.
But this part does sound ominous, “Ortega will allow Russian troops to carry out law enforcement duties”. Wonder why? Not unlike Cubans enforcing the laws in Venezuela.

That would all depend on what happens now. If for eight years it is built up as a launching pad for Russian weapons, and they start shelling civilian areas for said time, that might change.
Incidentally, there is no “Minsk Accord” that applies to your hypothetical scenario. You just don’t know right from wrong.
