Russian Prosecutors Move Forward with Plans of Death Penalty Against British Mercenaries in Ukraine

British mercenaries captured by Pro-Russian separatist forces of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) could be sentenced to death for conducting "combat operation," according to reports.

According to Russia's General Prosecutor's Office, the British fighters identified as Shaun Pinner, 48, and Andrew Hill, 35, along with Moroccan Ibrahim Saadoun, were involved in crimes under three articles of the DPR Criminal Code: the "commission of crimes by a group of persons," the "forcible seizure of power or forcible retention of power," and "mercenarism."

This is going to become leverage.

There were >6,800 Western mercenaries fighting in Ukraine as of April. More since then. You even had Western security firms take part in the fray (war is big business). Yes, the Russians have already taken US citizens as prisoners.

Unlike in Syria, Afghanistan and other conflicts where we were blocking people from traveling abroad to engage in a conflict (intercept them at an airport for example, or restrict travel), in this case we were basically sponsoring it because our intel services and law enforcement was not intercepting them (even though we knew about it) and some of the money we were giving as aid to Ukraine was used to pay for them. Sure, on TV publically Blinken would discourage US citizens from going there, but we didn't really try to stop it as we did elsewhere. So basically US tax dollars were given to Ukraine which turned around and hired mercenaries and bought US weapons (but people laughed at Tucker Carlson when he talked about the money behind this war early on).

What now?

I want one of these super geniuses that backed this war to explain to me how we will deal with our citizens, caught on the field of battle, as a mercenary, in a roundabout way paid for by the US government, to be dealt with? ***Do we buy them free and make deals or just forget about them?***

The British won’t let the life of a few citizens get in the way of their interventionist foreign policy.

Mercenaries aren’t entitled to Geneva Convention treatment. Go to fight for money and take your chances. I have no sympathy for them. I didn’t cry when those Russian mercs bit the big one in Syria and I won’t cry for any mercs who get killed in Ukraine.

Play stupid games; win stupid prizes

Invite yourself to fight in a war, of which you are not a citizen; you forfeit your rights. There is a lesson to be learned somewhere.

They went hoping to kill other men without consequence. Get some “props” for their tik-tok and grinder accounts.

Russians are famously humorless. They will not bend and these dudes are in for a long, lonely imprisonment or, more likely, a firing squad in the parking lot.

Wondering if their Uke comrades gave them up as a diversion for their own retreat.

The Brits gov gives less of a damn about their citizens than our does gives about us. That’s pretty bad because our gov is pretty damn low on that scale.

Everybody there is conducting “combat operations” — how is this a crime?

If the Brits are shooting civilians, then they should absolutely be tried.

This is going to become leverage.

Seems like Russia is playing this pretty smart.

These Mercs can't be protected, and will confess to War Crimes and Atrocities, and the information will slowly leak to the West.

There won't be much sympathy for them, as they are inconsequential, but Russia's message will be clear.

There have been several High Value Western (NATO) Military Officers also taken captive by the Russians, however the Russians have NOT claimed to have any of those captives whatsoever.

Now NATO knows what's going to happen to them.

They'll be singing like birds to Russian Intelligence, and they're never coming back or seeing a Western Diplomat again.

Leverage the West can't even mention.

The problem with this is that you give them no incentive to follow the Geneva Convention themselves.

My view is if they were in uniform and obeyed the terms of the Geneva Convention, they should be treated as lawful combatants.

It's great to be a Merc, if you're on the winning side.

“a firing squad in the parking lot.”

I understand they dont do that in prisons over there. They put you in a cell and sometime in the next days..you never know when, they send a couple guys in with pistols and shoot you in the back of the head.

So you get to sit in your cell and every time you hear those footsteps...

Don’t worry. A lot more effort will be expended trying to save these people, who went there after Russia warned of what would happen if they got caught, than was ever expended by the Gov’t on the MIAs and POWs in Vietnam. Maybe they could get John Kerry to negotiate.
