Top Apple Exec Quits Over Return-to-Office Policy
New York Post ^ | May 9, 2022 | Theo Wayt

A top artificial intelligence executive at Apple is leaving the company over its return-to-office policy, according to a report.

The news comes as Apple orders all corporate employees to return to the office for three days per week — a stricter policy than Big Tech competitors like Meta, Google and Amazon, which are allowing at least some employees to work remotely forever.

Director of machine learning Ian Goodfellow announced his resignation last week, telling colleagues that CEO Tim Cook’s push to get employees back into the office had driven him out.

Good. Let someone who needs a job and is dedicated to helping
the firm improve do the task.

It’s been demonstrated that productivity has been up and sick time has been down for those working at home; if he’s more productive at home thsn in the office, this guy may actually be an excellent example of “work ethic”.

Some people do like working from home, because they can get more work done. They don’t have 25 hours of meetings. Co-workers dropping by or somehow distracting them for hours with non-work stuff.

Fair enough.

I’ll tell you, I don’t have the discipline to do it.

Look at that.

Maynard Krebs has a grandson.

I found there are pros and cons both ways. But sometimes I have been in situations at the office where you can’t get very much done because of meetings and distractions.

Maynard Krebs has a grandson.

Yes, but unlike Maynard, he WORKS.

I doubt he got to the level he got on smarts alone. Someone will want his services. Good for him.

Maynard got a good job.

He’d have his own tour boat by now except for that stupid storm.

Maybe. But we need to be supervised so we'll get the job done. Otherwise?, we'll goof off.

I do agree with that possibility.

I have family members who do work from home and seem to
be accomplished at it.

I enjoyed working on site for 27 years. I had interaction
with other employees, was able to trouble-shoot problems
on the spot, and just enjoyed the separation of work from
home.

It being a large plant, there were times when I needed to
visit various locations to be effective in the position.

Each job has it’s own dynamics. Some can easily be done
at home. I had an experience and found myself distracted
there.

People are different. The requirements for jobs are also.

I understand where you are coming from.

The article says he's an "artificial intelligence" executive at Apple. His LinkedIn profile says he "Director of Machine Learning" at Apple. He made his way to Senior Staff Research Scientist in two stits at Google of less than three years. He also worked at OpenAI.

He got a BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford, and a PhD in Machine Learning at the University of Montreal.

He is very employable.

That was part of the plan from the start.I’ve also read that church attendance is still way down from before the virus panic. That, too, gladdens the hearts of everyone at Rat Party Headquarters...for obvious reasons.
