A combination of pandemic fatigue, being overworked, lengthy training time, and early retirements, is leading to a pilot shortage in the country. Now, airlines are upping the ante to fill the positions. In turn, several experts say that customers need to brace themselves for higher prices.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said that in the U.S., airlines aim to add 13,000 pilots this year, but the country only produces between 5,000 and 7,000 pilots annually, according to an April 21, 2022, earnings call transcript. Fewer pilots mean less supply, which translates to higher prices, he added.
Kirby added on the call that, “the pilot shortage for the industry is real and most airlines are simply not going to be able to realize their capacity plan because there simply aren’t enough pilots, at least not for the next five-plus years,” according to the transcript. “The other really large airlines will also probably be able to attract enough pilots, but for anyone else, I just don’t think it’s mathematically possible to meet the pilot demand for the capacity plans that are out there.”

Flying is an "all-in" commitment and the job offers little to transfer to other careers. Since pilots are one failed physical away from losing their career, who would ever go down that path just to be told a decade or two in that you have to take an experimental injection that could kill you or ruin your health and end your career?
Their union, instead of threatening a massive strike before the airlines issued the diktats, instead threw them under the bus.
I’m doing my part and refusing to fly as much as I can.
The airlines have publically announced that their hiring practices will ensure that 50% of pilots hired have to be women and minorities. I have a suspicion the airlines are not going to see an increase in passengers, as air travelers tend to get uncomfortable about flying if they don’t have confidence in the air crew.
This is going to have an impact on military aviation. A lot of pilots will be seduced by the prospect of large salaries and sign-on bonuses.
I imagine that Jet Fuel has more than doubled as well.
And the completely ignored the elephant in the room, that of vax injuries and attrition for refusing the vax.
It’s like hospitals whining about staffing shortages when they created them by mandating the vaccines for continued employment.
And a desire to leave the woke faggotry.
Even if the airlines are woke, there’s no UCMJ and there is $$$.
