TONACATEPEQUE, El Salvador — It has been four weeks since the shoemaker vanished from his hometown, hauled away in handcuffs by Salvadoran police.
The family of the man, Heber Peña, 29, has gathered business receipts and signatures from clients to prove he makes his money honestly. They fear he is now stuck in an overcrowded prison, accused of being a gang member.
Even so, the cobbler’s family still sees the benefits of the police crackdown that led to his arrest — and admires the leader behind it.
“Apart from this,” said Caleb Peña, Heber’s brother, “everything the president has done is magnificent.”
Mr. Peña is one of more than 18,000 Salvadorans imprisoned in recent weeks, after a spike in killings in March led the government to declare a state of emergency, suspending key civil liberties guaranteed in the Constitution and allowing children as young as 12 to be tried as adults for gang affiliation.
Human rights groups have denounced the actions as violations of fundamental freedoms. U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken urged the Salvadoran government to “uphold due process and protect civil liberties.
But most Salvadorans are not complaining. The country has grown weary of endless bloodshed, of the gangs that terrorize them, of the lawlessness that has inspired so many to travel more than 1,000 miles to the American border.

This is the Democrat game plan, create so much violence and lawlessness, so that the citizens will applaud draconian measures leveled against the citizens to control the violence and lawlessness that they themselves turn a blind-eye to.

So, the template is to let the criminals do as they please for so long that the people willingly accept the loss of their civil rights when the government finally cracks down.

Remember a few months ago, caravans were heading to the US border because the gangs were so powerful that it had become impossible to live there?
After a recent explosion of violence by MS13 the Congress there declared them a terrorist organization. Mere membership is enough to get you a stiff sentence. They just check your gang tattoos, and confirm with your cell phone contacts.
The gang inside prison are incommunicado so they can’t run the gangs from inside. Judges, cops, and guards dealing with them wear balaclavas so their families can’t be threatened. And the murder rate has fallen to zero.
The current president wants to make El Salvador a place where people will want to live, and the key is a massive takedown of MS13. Trump essentially declared war on them here, and Bukele has declared war on them there.

Amazing to see Freepers here jumping on the hate bandwagon for this guy as if El Salvador should be governed like some small town in Nebraska.
It’s been a gangland state run by gangs for decades. The solution will not be pretty, just like the solution to get rid of the Nazis and Japanese Imperials was to essentially level their cities until they gave up.
Luckily it won’t get THAT bad, but modern sensibilities viewing a developing country from thousands of miles away even clouds the judgement of conservatives apparently.
