Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely being discussed as a potential 2024 candidate for Republicans -- and he's doing little to knock down that chatter. And, his state of the state speech on Tuesday gave us all a preview of how DeSantis would run if he runs.
"Florida has become the escape hatch for those chafing under authoritarian, arbitrary and seemingly never-ending mandates and restrictions," DeSantis said, adding that Florida was now "the freest state in these United States."
DeSantis repeatedly touted his willingness to buck so-called conventional wisdom during his first term -- particularly when it came to dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in his state. DeSantis made mention of his decision to re-open Florida schools fully in the fall of 2020.
"We were right and they were wrong," DeSantis said, in what could easily double for a presidential campaign if/when he runs.
And, make no mistake: What DeSantis was doing in his speech was positioning himself for just such a run. Which feels like a natural next step from the first three years of DeSantis' time as governor; he has used his position to not only differentiate himself on Covid-19 mandates (and masking) but play directly into the arms of the Donald Trump base of the party -- on everything from "woke" culture in education to restrictive voting rights in the state.

“Amendment XII
The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;”
Which means that electors from Florida could not vote for both Trump and DeSantis.
That would make electing the ticket very difficult under present circumstances.
That is 100% false. There is nothing that says they cannot run on the same ticket.
Article II of the U.S. Constitution states the following:
The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.
What this means is that ONLY the Florida electors would be prohibited from voting for both Trump (as President) and DeSantis (as VP) in a presidential election.
It would still be stupid for Trump and DeSantis to both run as Florida residents, because that would open the possibility for a bizarre scenario in a very close election where Trump gets a majority of the electoral votes as President and DeSantis fails to get a majority as VP.
No party wants to risk a legal question in a very close electoral vote. So even if they could theoretically be from the same state, no party or candidates are going to risk losing EVs for a VP.
So you don’t count military service as a “real job” or just when that service is during a war you don’t agree with? Your comments make me wonder who you would actually support for 2024.
Sounds like a projection, in all honesty, my good friend. Here’s a list of a few of the actions taken by DeSantis, in just the last year, on issues that count. Several sound decidedly anti-deep state, to me.

During the next legislative session, DeSantis said that he will ask lawmakers to establish an Office of Election Crimes and Security within the Department of State that will accept election integrity-related complaints, investigate them and bring charges against those who violate Florida’s election rules. He will also ask lawmakers to increase ballot harvesting crimes from misdemeanor to 3rd-degree felony offenses.

The interpretation is that the elector cannot vote for a Prez and VP that are from the same state as the elector. They can vote for at most one - either Prez from their state, or VP. Not both.
Doesn’t preclude candidates though.

Your proverbial Harvard lawyer, who presumably could have started right away earning a substantial six figure salary, instead chooses to do his duty as he saw it to serve his country and submit to the authority of the military. By 2004 -- when DeSantis was commissioned as a Navy officer -- it was firmly established that the U.S. military had become nothing more than a mercenary force that was put in the service of foreign interests and multi-national corporations that had a financial stake in waging stupid wars that never ended.
By my count, the only three presidential candidates I can remember who served in Vietnam were Al Gore, John Kerry and John McCain. Good heavens ... if that was the best we could do, I would rather support a baboon for president.
This isn't the 1970s and 1980s anymore. Military service in presidential candidates has no compelling value to a lot of voters (me included).

I wouldn't necessarily hold that against him, but it's completely disingenuous for him and/or his supporters to run around now in 2022 pretending he's a white knight standing up to protect Americans from government abuse during the COVID fiasco.

So if both Trump and DeSantis run, it’d still be a good idea for one of them to leave town because the rule means they would likely lose the electoral vote in FL, since those guys could only vote for one or the other.
If all FL electors vote for Trump as Prez, they have to vote for a non-FL VP, meaning DeSantis loses FL.
