Ron DeSantis just gave his first 2024 speech
CNN ^ | January 12, 2022 | Chris Cillizza

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely being discussed as a potential 2024 candidate for Republicans -- and he's doing little to knock down that chatter. And, his state of the state speech on Tuesday gave us all a preview of how DeSantis would run if he runs.

"Florida has become the escape hatch for those chafing under authoritarian, arbitrary and seemingly never-ending mandates and restrictions," DeSantis said, adding that Florida was now "the freest state in these United States."

DeSantis repeatedly touted his willingness to buck so-called conventional wisdom during his first term -- particularly when it came to dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in his state. DeSantis made mention of his decision to re-open Florida schools fully in the fall of 2020.

"We were right and they were wrong," DeSantis said, in what could easily double for a presidential campaign if/when he runs.

And, make no mistake: What DeSantis was doing in his speech was positioning himself for just such a run. Which feels like a natural next step from the first three years of DeSantis' time as governor; he has used his position to not only differentiate himself on Covid-19 mandates (and masking) but play directly into the arms of the Donald Trump base of the party -- on everything from "woke" culture in education to restrictive voting rights in the state.

Trump is taking notice of DeSantis' jockeying.

I like Trump, but DeSantis is better. He understands the machinery of politics better that PDJT.

Don Jr. Needs to run for the Senate.

Trump had better be very careful how he handles DeSantis. If the two emerge as front runners in 24.

In 2016 he came out with a lot of rhetoric against Ted Cruz. “Lyin Ted”. Stuff like that.

Those kind of attacks against DeSantis, should they come? Will not bode well for Trump.

Posted on another thread:

“I like Trump a lot but frankly if I had to pick between the two I’d opt for DeSantis as would my wife.

Trump has always had a tendency to step on his own d!ck just to shove it in the other guys face. One of his endearing qualities in my book, but their are times when it does more harm than good.

DeSantis has done a wonderful job in Florida and there just aren’t many of his beliefs I don’t agree with. Bottom line, I’d be happy with either but nobody else.”

Trump/DeSantis ticket ok by me.

Trump would only be one term.

As much as I like DeSantis, as a politician I fear he may be more susceptible to the swamp.

I’d like to see Trump jail the swamp creatures first.

I've said here many times that I will vote for DeSantis if he's the nominee, but I will never trust him.

Look at the guy's background. He has all the characteristics I would expect to find in someone who is groomed for a "Deep State" political career.

There's something about a political figure who has never worked a real job in his life that I find highly off-putting as a voter.

I like Trump too and I dont mind him promoting the vaccine(Since it was done on his watch) but I dont like how he thinks its gutless to not say if you got the booster..its no one’s business who got the vaccine and who didn’t. If someone wants to mention it, fine, if they dont its their own business. I think Trump sees DeSantis as someone who has a serious shot of running and winning in 2024 so he’s lashing out. Heck DeSantis is the main reason why Id move to Florida in a freakin heartbeat if I had the chance

It was an excellent speech and he set out all of his points very clearly.

Hoping DeSantis is our candidate in 2024! There ´s a couple of other possibilities out there, but he’s proved that he’s tough and carries through on what he says.

Trump should devote himself to the media company he wants to establish…he’d do a lot more good that way, and we need a free media desperately. Plus it’s something for which he has a real gift. He’s a showman and could be our showman and help get good candidates across the board.

I remember EXACTLY the same talk in 2015 before Trump and Cruz went at it. If DeSantis becomes an enemy of Trump he can forget about getting a good chunk of Trump’s supporters. The Trump cross over appeal doesn’t translate to the other Repuke politicians. How many of these fools and traitors warned us about Trump’s tariffs on the Chicoms being a tax?

Only delusional forces and anti-Trump forces think Ron is better. Newt just said on the Lisa Boothe podcast Trump was the influential politician in our lifetime. Better than Reagan. Levin puts him up there with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These are real scholars of history talking. Ron hasn’t done anything yet in comparison and it is he who is the one who must be very careful.

Trump is a vicious fighter we need.

I like DeSantis, but he won’t get my vote unless Trump doesn’t run and endorses him.

Cruz was always unlikeable. RDS is not unlikeable. Trump so far is fumbling this. He needs to get on board with RDS and off his own past accomplishments

People are quite done with the stolen election, the vaccine, the mandates and are ready to be hopeful now. DT has a couple of days befor the rally to straighten up his strategy. That’s it.

Within 18 months MSLSD will break a story about DeSantis having raped a dozen kids while at college.

God, you are ignorant. Either that or you think his six years of service in the Iraq war count for nothing.

Hmmm. I’m going to give him some credit for his six years in JAG in the Navy, his work at Guantanamo, and deployment to Fallujah as legal adviser to SEALS.
I mean he did get the Bronze Star (non-combat,
without the V for Valor.)
Me, I’ll give him credit for having had a “real job.” He’s a trump without the excessively Heavy baggage. He’s got my vote in 2024

He’d better be ready for it. It will happen. They’ll make it up and hire fake witnesses.

Don Jr. Needs to run for the Senate.>>> Desantis needs to address the mandates and liability exceptions for all the money grabbers. and you are right he understand the government is evil. Trump used the Government and i don’t think ever will realize that they are the enemy. And if he keeps saying the vaccines saved millions of people he might not get my vote.

You're giving DeSantis credit for his service in a stupid war I never supported. That doesn't get him any traction with me. If Donald Trump had been elected President in 2000, DeSantis never would have spent a day in Iraq.

Let's be honest here. If this was a generic GOP candidate we were talking about, a lot of us would agree that the last thing this country needs is another Harvard lawyer in Washington -- especially in the White House, of all places.
