BOSTON (AP) — The New England states are bracing for extreme cold that is already closing some schools and threatening the power grid this week.
Boston, the state’s largest public school district, announced Monday that schools will not open Tuesday because of expected extremely cold temperatures.
The high in the city Tuesday is expected to be 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 C), with wind chills making it feel as low as minus 8 (minus 22 C), according to National Weather Service forecasters. It could feel as low as minus 15 (minus 26 C) in some areas of Massachusetts, according to the weather service.
And it could be even colder elsewhere in New England, as forecasters said wind chill could approach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 C) in some parts of western Maine. Central Maine Power, the largest utility in the state, said it expects to see a rise in electricity usage on Tuesday because of the use of electric space heaters and fireplaces.
Low temperatures below zero, not including the wind chill, are also expected in Burlington, Vermont, and Concord, New Hampshire. Southern New England is unlikely to be spared, as forecasters said Providence, Rhode Island, should expect a wind chill value of as low as minus one degree Fahrenheit (minus 17 C).

WOW! That has never, ever happened before in all of history!...............
Stupid Global Warming. Be More Funny!
Used to walk to school in those temps. No big deal.
It’s all due to GoreBull warming, don’tcha know.
Honestly, this doesn’t sound that cold for this part of the country for the dead of winter.
Is this a joke? 12 degrees in Boston is now a climate emergency?!
Aka....Winter.
We’ve become a nation of pussies.
Cold? That’s spring is just around the corner up here in the great white north. :Novak Djokovic
Another excuse to non-teach.
I’ve been in MA my whole life. We don’t like it when the temperature goes below zero, but it happens. It’s “interesting” because it’s not all that common, but it’s not at all shocking either. Temperatures tomorrow are going to be 15 above zero? Well ... I’ll bundle up. Yawn.
A day I remember well. We went to the beach and the sea water was like a frozen margarita out to about 100 yards.
Much colder than what’s being reported here.
And wind chill means nothing unless you’re exposed.
...1980... It was the coldest Christmas Day of modern record in the northeastern U.S. Temperatures as cold as 36 degrees below zero were reported in New York State, and as the sharp cold front swept southeastward the temperature at Boston MA plunged from 34 degrees to seven degrees below zero during the day. Newport, Rhode Island recorded a low of 4 degrees below zero, breaking the record of 6 degrees, set in 1975 and the wind chill got down to 11 degrees below zero, breaking that record of 14 degrees below zero from 1968.
I am sure that windmills, solar farms, and unicorn farts will keep them all toasty warm!
I’ve been a couple of hours north of Boston where it was minus 20 to 35.
Same sh**, different year.
The only thing different is the increase in the cost of gas...in my home AND in my tank.
We had temps like that all of last week. No schools or businesses closed.
I used to walk to school in temps colder than that! Granted it was only a mile away.................
