Eric Adams will delay his public inauguration ceremony by several hours on Saturday, Jan.1, to accommodate his Jewish supporters, the Forward reported Tuesday.
Traditionally, the inauguration of New York City’s elected officials takes place on Jan. 1 at noon. This year, Jan. 1 is a Saturday, meaning the midday ceremony would be happening on Shabbat, when observant Jews typically do not travel.
Adams decided to shift the ceremony until later in the evening after Shabbat ends so his observant Jewish supporters could attend.

Capital “P” for pandering.
Can we move the inauguration up to December 31? Warren Wilhelm might do like the Clintons and trash the mayor’s office on the way out.
No argument there.
Ouch! That’s gonna hurt the Squad. Lol.
Hope he didn’t shabbat his pants.
Great idea. Early December 31. Won’t interfere with Shabbat observance of his supporters, although that would be a Friday and might interfere with some Muslim supporters. Oh, the Hell with it! Hold it right now. If Wilhelm has a hissy fit, have some burly, de-funded policemen about to be reinstated escort him out of City Hall and down the steps onto his ear.
I thought it was considerate. The average non-Jew wouldn’t think of that.
It’s well meant pandering, and he’s hardly the first to ever pander. But no. Five more minutes of Wilhelm as Mayor is eight years too many.
You’ll survive it.
Shabbat starts on Friday, 31JAN2021 at 4:20pm.
It ends at 5:25pm on 1JAN2022 on Saturday.
Delaying from 12:00 noon until 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. I don’t consider a big deal. If it was a day (24 hours), then you’d have an argument. Having it after dark while the Christmas lights are still up will make it even more special.
“...and people may die.”
People die every day. You can’t stop them from dying whether it’s from a virus (the flu or pneumonia), a car accident, or from suicide. How many people die on an average Saturday in NYC? How many extra people do you think will die in six hours? Do you think death will stop immediately once the new guy is in office?
Could be worse, imagine if he delayed it because of Ramadan so his Muslim supporters could attend.
It says “public” swearing in ceremony - perhaps that means he will still be mayor before this and only the public ceremony is being delayed.
Think of how many drunk people from the night before will appreciate this!
Meh - I don’t have a problem with it. It’s certainly pandering but it also shows that he’s going to respect them far more than Wilhelm ever did.
I think the felon just released on miniscule bail might think twice before whipping out his shiv and stabbing another passerby to death for the thrill of it, now that there’s a new regime in town.
This is probably Adams reaching out to make amends with NYC Jews. IMHO, it's a smart move.

I don’t live in NY anymore. But I still have friends and family there.
That may be so.
Good idea—stick it to the Anti-Semites out there.
