MSNBC’s Reid: Media Dismissed Hitler as a Joke — Now Same Pattern Emerging with Trump

MSNBC’s host Joy Reid said Monday on her show “The ReidOut” that the media dismissed Adolf Hitler as a joke and “we’re seeing a similar pattern emerge when it comes to the threat” of former President Donald Trump.

Reid said, “Let not forget the many who laughed at Donald Trump back in 2016 and even after he was elected. Thanks to four years of Trump, this is a backsliding democracy, according to an international think tank. And that’s no joke. The truth is this country doesn’t have a great track record of recognizing authoritarians for what they are, at least not until it’s too late.”

Not actually true.

Both Mussolini and Hitler were seen as possible signposts for a new type of politics. Sure, both fascist leaders had warts, but both were very popular at home, and both were seen as very successful at the start. Hitler's economy was strong. Hitler got Austria. Hitler got Sudetenland. Hitler got half of Poland. Hitler was never seen as a joke.

You could, I suppose, make the case that Hitler kind of sounded like he wanted to kill all the Jews, and maybe people didn't take that too seriously and treated that as a bit of a joke. But, aside from a crazy notion like that, both Hitler and Mussolini were taken very seriously and they actually had a fair amount of international support in the early days.
