By Sam Quinones
In the fall of 2006, law enforcement on the southwest border of the United States seized some crystal methamphetamine. In due course, a five-gram sample of that seizure landed on the desk of a 31-year-old chemist named Joe Bozenko, at the Drug Enforcement Administration lab outside Washington, D.C.
Organic chemistry can be endlessly manipulated, with compounds that, like Lego bricks, can be used to build almost anything. The field seems to breed folks whose every waking minute is spent puzzling over chemical reactions. Bozenko, a garrulous man with a wide smile, worked in the DEA lab during the day and taught chemistry at a local university in the evenings. “Chemist by day, chemist by night,” his Twitter bio once read.

“A couple days ago one guy asked me to charge his tablet because he broke his charger. An hour and a half later he had called the police claiming I stole his tablet.”
That’s not necessarily a sign of drug use. Plenty of sober people these days that would do that.
Mr. Quinones would do well to carry and use a body camera or voice recorder.
Haha, Mr Quinones should get a load of the drug-fueled “conservatives” partying every night (that’s EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for YEARS) in my neighborhood. You can always tell when somebody brings the crack pipe out because the hysterical giggling and insane screeching are loud enough to be picked up on my security monitor. Threats. Chanting. Stuff that sounds like people being attacked. This is in the middle of the night, btw. Even though it would likely set the forest on fire, I often find myself praying that their lab, or their bank of “bitcoin” machines, or SOMETHING will explode or catch on fire because it seems like that’s the only way it will stop.
I agree with the other poster that said you should get a gun, Mr Quinones.
There is an old video clip of Frank Zappa, maybe close to 50 years ago, in which he says society really only has one problem, and that is Mental Illness. If we can find out how to really get a handle on Mental Illness, everything else would get better. I think that’s true. And, for a wide variety of reasons, the Mental Illness problem has gotten drastically worse in recent decades. Seems like everyone is crazy now.
And, additionally, as I have commented on other threads — I have known quite a few people who were somewhat concerned about COVID. No one wants to get sick, right? So, they figured, they’d get vaccinated, because you might as well, right? And after getting vaccinated they become anxious wrecks, terrified of COVID, always wearing masks, always mindful of social distancing, and mostly hiding in their homes, refusing to socialize with anyone. I think the vaccine makes people crazy.
A homeless dude with a tablet. Talk about a “First World” problem. WTF?
...but drugs should be legalized, and the functioning part of society who didn’t abuse their bodies and minds should pay for endless rounds of rehab.
The article’s conclusion misses the larger point. There is a spiritual war going on within each of us and society. We’ve driven God and Jesus from the public sphere, while evil temptations are more readily available than ever before.
Breaking a FR rule, i read the entire, well written, article. Makes me thankful for being sane.
Perhaps the answer lies with a real viral epidemic. Callously, there are so many addicted people that have ceased to be human. In the non-human animal world, we remove them from the herd. FYI, in nature, only humans choose to self destruct.
I just finished reading the article, very lengthy, but I encourage everyone to read it. A very enlightening read about a subject I know almost nothing about. Very well written and informative.
This is a problem, I fear, that is never going to go away, and the liberal groupthink of ignoring the problem, along with our open Southern border will only ensure that it is only going to get worse.
I know the socialist idea of tearing down our society and rebuilding it is what’s happening, but what blows my mind is the fact that they DON’T CARE. Their arrogance in thinking that they are going to be able to control all of this is stupefying. It will consume them as well. They can only insulate themselves for so long.
Meth of any type didn’t just suddenly appear in this person’s system.
He willingly participated in finding/obtaining/swallowing it.
No different than “Guns’ killing people.
PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.....
The gun was just the chosen weapon.
Thanks for posting this article.
Other then prostitution and meth peddling, the author sidesteps or isn’t concerned with how the homeless get their meth. Where’s the money coming from? Crime, welfare, charity? At least around here in DC, the bicycles and tents are from idiots who ignore the consequence of what they have enabled: are they also, in some way, paying for the drugs? I’m honestly curious.
This was an incredible article. I could not stop reading. Thank you for posting it.
