Buttigieg: Families who buy electric vehicles 'never have to worry about gas prices again'
The Hill ^ | November 29, 2021 | Maureen Breslin

Posted on 11/29/2021 9:49:01 AM PST by karpov

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stressed in a new interview that families who buy electric vehicles (EVs) "never have to worry about gas prices again."

While speaking on MSNBC's "The Sunday Show With Jonathan Capehart," Buttigieg noted that Democrats' proposed social spending package includes incentives to make it more affordable to buy an electric vehicle.

Buttigieg said that families would essentially have a "$12,500 discount" in transportation costs, adding that "families who own that vehicle will never have to worry about gas prices again."

"The people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income," Buttigieg said.

"They would gain the most by having that vehicle. These are the very residents who have not always been connected to electric vehicles that are viewed as kind of a luxury item," he added.

"If we can make the electric vehicle less expensive for everybody, more people can take advantage, and we'll be selling more American-made EVs, which means in time they'll become less expensive to make and to buy for everybody," Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg's comments come after the Department of Energy announced last week that it would release 50 million barrels of oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to control rising gas prices.

Excerpt of testimony of Robert Bryce to a House Committee.

The history of EVs is a century of failure after failure. In 1911, the New York Times said the electric car “has long been recognized as the ideal solution.” In 1990, the California Air Resources Board mandated 10% of car sales be zero-emission vehicles by 2003. Today, 31 years later, only about 6% of the cars in California have an electric plug.

The average household income for EV buyers is about $140,000. That’s roughly two times the U.S. average. And yet, federal EV tax credits force low- and middle-income taxpayers to subsidize the higher income EV owners.

Lower-income Americans are facing huge electric rate increases for grid upgrades to accommodate EVs even though they will probably never own one.

This month, the California Energy Commission estimated the state will need 1.3 million new public EV chargers by 2030. The likely cost to ratepayers: about $13 billion.

Powerful lobby groups want Congress to spend billions on electrification schemes that will impose regressive taxes on low-income Americans, reduce our resilience, and increase reliance on China; a dubious trifecta.

Let’s amplify that last point: reliance on electric vehicles will put our future squarely in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.

The manufacture of EVs is not sustainable. Mining for lithium and cobalt, and the disposal of batteries is horribly harmful to the environment. For owners, replacement of batteries every few years will cost $5 - $10 thousand.

EVs are coal powered; let’s not kid ourselves. Most electric grids are powered by coal, some by natural gas, and fewer by nuclear.

Next time somebody tries to tell you these things are green...

drivers can charge their cars in as little as 30 minutes.

How long does it take to put gas into your car? If that is the best case scenario, one can only imagine the lines at the charging stations. And what happens when you have huge traffic jams due to some idiots who forgot to charge their cars?

Let the marketplace control the transition from gas to electric or some other propulsion system. The USG should stay out of it. It takes many years to develop the infrastructure. The capital investment in the internal combustion engine is massive affecting tens of millions of jobs. .

Some plant has to produce electricity. Probably from Coal to power EV’s.

“61% of electricity is generated by fossil fuels.”

But they will be terribly shocked to see the cost of electricity going up. And then they will blame greed for electricity going up. Because if only the ‘right people’ were creating electricity all would be well.

Where is the coal going to come from?

The problem China is having right now is they were getting a lot of coal from Australia. The PM of OZ said the origins of covid should be investigated regarding its potential Wuhan origins. Xi(the CCP) did not like that and stopped coal imports(and other things) from OZ.

So, without coal from OZ they had to cut electricity production. They literally shut down factories across the country. This has been one of the main reasons behind the global supply shortage. This is why all that crap made in China is behind schedule.

I couldn’t stomach to read past the headline. In the story, did Mayor Pete say the electric vehicles would run on fairy dust, or candy and nuts?

I think there is plenty of coal available long term.
There may be short term issues with obtaining it.

As a smart guy said on CNBC about 10 yrs ago...

The Chinese have central planning by scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, and the US has central planning by lawyers. Neither is good, but by definition we lose.

On another thread I posted about electric schoolbuses. Didn’t think about the short lifespan of batteries.

Batteries last 5-6 years before needing replacement. School buses are allowed to remain in service up to 18 years.

Zero economic sense.
Back to Buttigeg and his stupid comment that rural people need electric cars. How many 30 year old trucks are still in service in farm communities?

I’ve read some analysis that says the ChiComs are going to electric cars powered by hundreds of new coal power plants to conserve petroleum for their military.

I got into an online dispute with a Gen Z’er who assures me that government services are “rights” because he gets them whether he ever pays taxes or not.

Ask him what happens when said all-giving government declares him a non-person.

China is currently the biggest producer but also the largest consumer of coal.
They consume a lot more than they can produce.
